If y’all are old farts like me you’ll recall that the original 5.56/.223 AR’s had a slow twist (1-14 or 1-12, can’t recall which). Bullets were very lightly stabilized and would quickly upset when hitting anything, causing wounds far out of proportion to caliber. Then Unc decided they needed to penetrate stell lid at 300 meters. Heavier slug, faster twist. Super stabilized the round for range and penetration, but at a price of less lethality per round (made it a high speed drill)😏

I think my AR is 1/9

M16 was 1:12.

M16 was 1:12.
I was thinking that. Lightly stabilized the standard slug. Initial reports from Vietnam told of massive wounding by the little round (ok, NOT as massive as the 105 effect they generate in the movies but still way out of proportion to the tiny slug😊). FWIW it’s also worth noting that the military spec’s a completely different powder that the weapon was designed to use-which caused an awful lot of issues with the rifles in the field initially, excessive fouling, etc.
