I had a 44mag ruger superblackhawk should have kept it . But in January I am getting the smith and Wesson model 27 that will satisfy my itch for the Dirty Harry feel

Out of all the revolver cartridges, the .44mag has always been my favorite, my Raging Hunter is a beast, but fun

Do you mean a Model 29?

27 is .357…

Either way, congrats.

The S&W 500 is too big for me. Sorry, no thanks. I know I would hate the recoil and the proportions of the gun are not balanced at all. The model 29 and the 629 are beautiful to behold. I have a 4" 629 and love it.
My first .44 mag. was a Ruger Bisley. It was great fun to shoot and quite comfortable whatever the powder charge. I could shoot it all day like a .38 Special. Alas, I moved on to .38s so I could be more competitive. I lost the grins, but gained some speed in my split times. Now that I'm older and slower, I've gravitated back to the bigger calibers since they do still produce the biggest grins for me. If you can't have fun, why do it? Right?

I’m not shy with big bore hand cannons, shot most owned most, but when I got my S&W 500, took it to the range, loaded it up with full power loads, cracked off 1 round, laid the gun down and quietly unloaded the remaining 4 rounds and never shot it again, eventually sold it, don’t miss it.

I never minded my .500 until I got RA; it had a lot less (perceived) recoil than my 329 Backpacker .44 Mag…

Considered getting a .460, but…I’m done long-range handgunning for deer, and just can’t get excited about it; if I want to handgun hunt deer again, I’ll either stick with my 7.5” 657, or put the 14” .30-30 barrel on the Contenderizer.

Guess the .500 SW is not for everyone. Had the opportunity to shoot one with the 8" (or in that neighborhood) barrel and the brake and recoil wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting. Very similar to my Taurus M44 4" ported barrel, but leaned more toward a shove than a snap/punch.

It did confirm my biggest fear going in, however. Now I really want one. Thankfully, the cost of ammo will help to temper that desire.

As far as what my found-out-difference between the 357mag and 44mag is sound. 357 was a crackle and 44 was a boom. I needed ear protection for the 357, but shot 44mag without protection ;) (the ear kind) and didn't bother me.

The .500 really isn’t that bad…considering that that 8” model weighs over five pounds, with most factory ammo.

That being said…a HAWT 500gr XTP (1500+fps, iirc) handload?

It’s a double handful and a half.

Damn! It’s like that?
It really depends on you.

When I got my .500, I was shooting a LOT of .44 mag out of an 6” M629, and an 10” SBH…recoil didn’t bother me, unless it was FAST (see: Airweight.44’s & .357’s, and plow-handle FA .44 mags…).

Try it. You will either be tickled pink (like I was) or put it down after 1 or two shots (and zero shame, there…like heavily peated Scotch whisky, incredibly hoppy IPA’s & nitrous oxide,it’s not for everyone).

I picture @HansGruber having a super hopped East coast style IPA, swagger over to the range, let loose a few .500 rounds and swagger back over to have a dram of Lagavulin

Shot one .. prefer a .50 cal desert eagle or a barrett rifle to a .500 revolver 😉

I’m heading to the range on Friday and I will test a couple of the rentals they have and share my thoughts.
