The Fighting Shotgun: A Tool for Professionals, Not Amateurs

Benelli M1S90 Tactical; 7rd tube, flowing robes, striking. Brenneke low recoil #4 buck. I can get 5 hulls in the air at the same time while carving out the a/b zones of a silhouette at 5 yards (realistic engagement distance for its purpose—repelling boarders inside the house).

5 rounds Federal Tactical 9 pellet onboard if that’s not enough.

The Benelli inertia system is probably the most reliable semi-auto I’ve ever played with—but their ARGO system the M4 runs probably has it beat; just not enough experience with my Turkenelli M4gery to make that call yet.

The Shotgun world is filled with more myths than any aspect of shooting except maybe black powder.

I teach 4-H kids, and with the Advanced group (HS age), I try to get them instruction on guns I expect they will be buying in a few years. I know a shotgun will probably be one of their very first gun purchases, so I try to hold what I call a “Shotgun Mythbusters” class every couple of years. There are so many myths to bust, there isn’t enough time to swat them all.

The article touched on a few:
-You don’t need to aim a shotgun/buckshot will fill a room or alley.
-Birdshot is best for defense.
-Racking a pump to scare people.
-Patterns of 1” per yard.

That’s a great start, but yes it does take a book to make a good dent into it.

If I were clearing houses for miscreants I would prefer an M4 shotgun. But defending home and ranch I am confident with my trusty 870.

I agree that racking a pump will not necessarily make bad guys soil themselves, but it will damn sure get their attention. LE training with the pump shotgun is to carry the gun in the cruiser "cruiser safe" or "cruiser ready", with no round in the chamber. You necessarily had to rack the action when deploying the gun. In the late 70's I made a felony stop on one of two cars involved in armed home invasion robberies, with a male driver and female passenger, both armed. I held them at gunpoint from the right rear of their car until my backup arrived. Later the driver told detectives he was going to shoot me if I approached his window, but changed his plan when he heard me chamber a round, and couldn't see where I was. The shotgun was my best friend in many dark alleys and felony stops.

Well it’s very far from a certainty. Far enough I would never as a civilian deploy that action. I’ll tell you why. I was in a situation once where I was squared off with 3 guys who were in a car. In an attempt to diffuse the situation without it involving prison time I jacked a live round out of the 500 so that menacing sound might deter the guy getting out of the car. It did not. So my choices were to either shoot him or take the butt of the shotgun and drive it through his face. I chose the latter.

A bayonet would have changed the dynamics....😉

You never know how an assailant might react. I have seen where they become more aggressive when a firearm is presented

About a week after the shotgun incident I was forced to kick the crap out of this guy’s brother in a local bar. He was an MMA guy and decided he should avenge his brother. His mistake was telling me he was going to beat my ass instead of just hitting me. In the end I stood outside the bar taunting him to come out and finish what he started. He would not. I was thrown out of the bar while he and his friends were not. So my wife threw a beer bottle through the plate glass window and we went on home.

Fun times. 🤣
