If there is a weapon that defines little evolutions, it is the Maynard Carbine debuting in 1851.

Thanks for the post. I didn't know much about the Maynard. If there was a hole in the base of the cartridge to allow the cap ignition to fire, how was the powder retained in the cartridge?
If had to guess perhaps the flammable nitrate paper used for years in musket cartridges.
 
Nitrate makes sense. So maybe a paper liner in the cartridge?

From the article: The rifles came in either .35 or .50 caliber and a rimmed metallic cartridge that held the projectile and powder but left a hole in the rear of the cartridge.
