Although I'm not necessarily a Smith fan, this one is a truly beautiful piece. (It must be the Colt bbl ;)) The only thing I would have preferred would have been to not stipple the back strap. Maybe a rolled cross hatch or even a longitudinal parallel pattern or something similar, but the stippling just seems to take away from the overall smoothness and grace of the gun.

There are a couple Smiths I wouldn't mind owning even right out of the box, but this custom would definitely make the list of those I'd want. As it stands, the only Smith I can remember ever owning was/is the Model 60 in the safe that I've had for the better part 50 years IIRC. I did have at one time a little stainless .38 Spl built by an outfit called "Security Industries" that was a remarkable remake of the Mod 36 (Chief's Special) Smith. Now I know the Mod 60 is supposed to be a stainless version of the Mod 36, but in my hand it feels much bigger than a stock Mod 36. It does have a Pachmyer grip which is probably why, but even the frame seems bigger.

I was in a LGS one day many years ago when a LOE came in to sell/trade it for something. I knew the store owner personally and when he looked over my way I just kind of gave him a 'high sign' that I'd like the 60 to take home with me. Unknown to me at the time, the little gun had had a major trigger/action job and was almost as smooth as a Colt. They made the trade, then he and I made a deal, and it went home with me that afternoon.

I've shot maybe a couple 100 rounds through it over all those years. I carried it on my side during all/most of the classes and individual instruction I've done over the years.

Better get one then!

Sure something to consider, but then at my age I just don't do enough shooting anymore to justify very many new guns. Who knows, the urge just might strike !!! (y)(y)(y)

There's four on GB right now!

Better not wait too long since @BET7 will see them & grab at least one.

I don't know papa, many years ago I had a couple Ruger Speed/Security Six's and I'm thinking they had bbl's a little under 3" and did a pretty good job. Certain ammo was good for a pretty big flash and some noise, but what short .357 Mag doesn't, ya know? Never actually compared them one/one with anything longer to say for sure, so just not sure, but I did like both of them.

Nah, not at this time so you guys wanting one are safe for now 😆. I recently bought a S&W 500 w/10” barrel. I did toy with the thought of getting a S&W PC 460 w/14” barrel & bi-pod (as seen below), but that will have to wait.

Talyn, strangely enough I went over to GB after you mentioned there were 4 available and saw something really strange. The first one listed was shown as "Factory " new and offered for something around $1200 as a 'buy now'. It had very slight/light roll marks on the cylinder and was a little skuzzy around the rear of the cylinder on the frame, but really did look new with a 'buy now' price.

Strange thing was that the other 3 all were up for bids with no 'buy now' price IIRC, and first one was already up around the $1600 mark. The other 2 were starting just a little less than the first one could be bought at. I don't know but that just struck me as strange ..... how 'bout you? Especially why anyone would bid up to $1600 when the same gun is available right next to it for $400 less.

I've never bought anything from GB and am probably missing something. Maybe you can point it out for me.

Thanks. (y) (y) (y)

It is a very nice looking firearm but I have always been of the opinion that a .357 mag needed a 4" BBL. at least.
I have carried and shot many .357s over the years. A 3 inch .357 magnum is a very nice option. I have found they conceal better than a 4, and I really find little difference in ballistics and accuracy. And in the smaller and medium frames like the J and K frames the 3 inch has a very nice balance.

For hunting revolvers I would jump up to a 6 rather than a 4 inch anyways. Although I did find 4.5 ibches perfect in my Ruger Redhawk in. 44 mag for balance. For defensive use 3 inches work just fine, in my hands at least.

The 3 inch Model 60 is my favorite .357 magnum defensive revolver.

@jumpinjoe

Some folks get caught up in bidding wars when, like you say, the same item is available cheaper from another vendor on GB. IMO, it's pretty stupid to compete with others just for the sake of it.

I've bought off of GB several times. It's been handy for me when I've been looking for something specific, and it's unavailable locally. GB is basically a clearing house for sellers, large & small. And a person can sell items on GB also, but I've never done that.

It's pretty easy, just register, identify your desired FFL, and look for what you want for a price you're willing to pay, even if you end up bidding with others. If you win (bidding or buy it now) you just step through the checkout process. You pay the shipping.

I always compare items being sold based on whether the seller charges a cc % fee or not, and what shipping costs they charge.

GB sends you a shipping notice with tracking so you know when it gets to your FFL, then you just have to finalize things with it.

One neat thing about GB is you can add an item being bid on to a watch list & GB will send you email updates.

Lastly, I recently made a purchase on an item from a large GB vendor and watched the price they initially offered. The item wasn't moving much then they took $50 off their first price so then I moved on it. So, patience can be a virtue if you're not in a hurry and/or the item is readily available on GB.

Hope all this helps.

Regards,

☝️☝️☝️ Yep, it helped much. I kinda' knew how it worked, but was surprised to see 4 items alike with 1 being offered as a buy now, and several others offered on a bid price several hundred $$$'s more than the other one. That just don't make sense to us country boys !!!👍👍👍

I'm starting to get back into revolvers. I like the tritium front night sight and adjustable rear, and the 2.5" barrel, but I could do without the vent at the front. I don't mind ports that run parallel to the barrel/sight, like on several Taurus and Charter Arms models, but I've never really felt that ports were necessary on a .357 Mag. If the recoil is too much with .357, then I would move down to .38 Spl. +P or basic .38 Spl. This may just be a matter of personal taste. I'm sure the Model 19 Carry Comp is a fine revolver.

If have ever used EBay, good, not so much or indifferent, is similar. Guess could call them GBay? :)
Bidding wars? I walk away. Another deal is usually around the corner. Patience is a virtue and sometimes so is timing?
