The Springfield Echelon vs Sig P320 (The Best Modular Pistol?)

Ooh…those last couple minutes, tho.

the Echelon is going to have to ripen on the vine for awhile to properly compare to the P320. Just having a serialized FCU doesn’t mean anything. Let’s see all the new models that SA builds upon and a robust aftermarket, which always seems to be SA’s weak spot. That said, the Echelon certainly has a lot of potential and if all that happens is they shame everyone else into a direct mount optic system it will be a success.

P360……a new variant????

Looks like some QC fail on the mag.

Never had an XD/XDm mag fail like that.

If there's no locking tab on an extended baseplate then "that" happens.
There is a tab, the magazine was assembled wrong. Who ever put the magazine together put the locking tab inside the mag body. It’s really easy to do and the first time I took mine apart I put it together wrong. The base will slide right off. I had to sit there are look at it, because putting it together wrong is actually easier and seems more natural than putting it together properly. I had to figure it out how the tall tab went outside the back of the body of the mag well because then how do you take it apart. Then it dawned on me you have to shove the locking base way up above the mag body so the base would slide off.

The wrong way the back of the locking tab is inside the body of the magazine.

If you assemble the magazine like this the extended base plate will slide right off just like in the video. If you look at the picture below the locking tab is in the base, but not in the position to hold it together.

Now the correct way is to have the back tab outside of the mag body. It will not fall apart this way.

See this is why it could look weird, this is how to properly put the mag together. See how the tab is behind outside the mag body.

Again this is why it can look wrong at first, but if you shove it in, the locking tab will fall into the extended base.

Picked up an Echelon and after 300 rounds:
General impression: Attractive, well-made pistol that is Glockish.

The trigger did not impress at first, but in all fairness, my prior range time had been spent with the PDP Pro compact, which has a much lighter trigger. Second trip to the range, the trigger felt much better, and I believe it will improve with break in and just getting used to it. I feel confident I could use it for duty right now.

The ball in socket sights take some getting used to, but the more I shot it, the more comfortable I became with that set up. And I like to plink at distance (50 to 100 yards) to know what I can do with a pistol and was getting good hits.

The slide gets HOT with some rounds thru it!

Only odd/negative thing was the slide cover plate came off while shooting and donked me in the face. Didn't hurt but couldn't find the cover screws or the #1 pin set. A call to Springfield and replacements are on the way.

Generally, I like the pistol a lot. Reminds me of a Glock that's been really customized. I've owned other Glock clones that were smaller companies that had teething issues. I had a ZEV (also modular) that never gave me a problem, but I've read reports where others weren't as lucky. Compact Shadow Systems was really close to being The One until it started self-ejecting OEM Glock mags after one shot. MagPul mags continued to work fine, but a gun will only fail me once.

I'm hoping that Springfield's years of manufacturing experience will translate to a drama free edition of 2000 Rounds of Gunsmithing. I'm also looking forward to some accessories as this pistol has the feel of being perfect for duty/self defense.

Slide plate cover came off of the echelon rentals at 3 gun shops I frequent.

I think SA has an issue to fix.

As stated before, perhaps SA needs to offer another "solid-top" version of the Echelon without the MRD mounting feature.

A simple CAD/CM/CNC fix.
