The problem with getting any kind of verified census is that they roam over such a large geographic area and are usually on the move. They are going to follow the food source, so if you have lots of game in your area and other conditions are right you are going to have big cats on occasion. Locals have told me they know when there is a big cat in the area because the deer behave differently. I have seen trail camera photos of panthers (and bears) visiting deer feeders. Biologists tell me the adult Florida Panther will have a range of about 300 square miles. Development affects game habitat which in turn affects cat hunting behavior.
