Thieves shoot at homeowner. Homeowner gets charged.

Depends on the state would be my guess, but I inly know Texas
Yes, a citizen should be intimately familiar with their state laws/Codes and their nuances regarding self defense and property if they exist.

For example in my state an annotated code defines how a citizen may defend other property.

Use Of Force In Defense Of Other Property

45-3-104. Use of force in defense of other property. A person is justified in the use of force or threat to use force against another when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes that the conduct is necessary to prevent or terminate the other person's trespass on or other tortious or criminal interference with either real property, other than an occupied structure, or personal property lawfully in the person's possession or in the possession of another who is a member of the person's immediate family or household or of a person whose property the person has a legal duty to protect. However, the person is justified in the use of force likely to cause death or serious bodily harm only if the person reasonably believes that the force is necessary to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.

A few years back on incident occurred but the homeowner was convicted because he enticed an unarmed perp to enter his garage, then he shot him. Now that homeowner is breaking rocks in the state pen.

How many times has it t been said? Don’t talk to the Police without talking to your lawyer first.
I can't say I feel bad for the guy. He did it to himself with his big mouth.

What I don't get is how cops can break into the wrong home and shoot citizens in their own bed, or how they can shoot recklessly at unarmed fleeing subjects while in public, and that's perfectly acceptable. If a scared untrained homeowner who was just a victim of a crime shoots at someone who fired on him first, it's a crime.

If a trained police officer admitted to shooting in a similar fashion with his eyes closed at a perp who shot at him first while out in public, absolutely NOTHING would have come of it.

Have you seen most LEO shoot ?
You would swear their eyes are closed anyway. That’s watching them shoot at static targets.

yes, yes i have, at the public range i go to. once in a while, there will be anywhere from 1 to 6 officers qualifying.

sometimes, the range will be open to the rest of us, as that is going on. (as there are 12 lanes, and they only use maybe 4 of them)

sometimes, it is closed for x amount of time, cuz they have the lights off, and the LEO's are practicing using thier flashlights during live fire training. so that is understandable.

but, the times that it is open for all of us..??

yeah.......they many times don't do as well, as some of us do.

but, to be "fair"..???

i am not certain the amount of training they are required to get during academy training, then after graduation.

personally, i'd like to see mandatory monthly range times for all of them.

that'll (hopefully) cut down on the expenses of buying ammo, after a gunfight, involving several LEO's spraying rounds everywhere.

and for the record, i am a supporter of our LEO community.

I’m a huge supporter of Law Enforcement. My grandfather and 3 uncles were Police Officers
3 great friends are current officers.
2 cant hit squat and the 3rd is a K9 officer thats a competition 1911 shooter. I dont mess with him 😜

I’ve shared this photo before. My target is far right. The target next to me in the middle were two LEOs in uniform from where I live. I kept thinking they better hope I’m not a bad guy!

They carry guns everyday for a living, get free practice ammo, and their and civilian lives are literally dependent on them being able to neutralize a threat at a moments notice. They should take matters into their own hands as far as training is concerned because their threat level is much higher, and they carry a firearm more than most. They should be held to a higher bar as citizens and not lower than citizens.

I know if I was in law enforcement or the military and neither offered much training, I'd get trained on my own time and dime for my own self preservation.

As far as us "gun nuts" are concerned, it's mind-boggling that anties will trust L.E. with guns even though many of their issued Glocks and P320s are "magically" going off on their own, but they don't trust us with firearms.

That's actually better than 95% of most range dwellers at the ranges I've been to where rapid fire is banned. Most civilians targets look like it was hit with bird shot.

Is that only at 5ish yards slow fire?

Almost universally false. They don't get free ammo other than what they use when doing qualifications or official police training. A great number of them only shoot their guns once a year at qauls.

My officer buddies have to pay for ammo and their own range sessions.

Around here they get 1 hour monthly at the police range and one 50 rd box of ammo per dept policy.
Outside of that is their own time and $$

That's more than a lot of my cop friends get. In the city ( St. Louis) they get nothing. The county and some of the municipalities are a little more generous.
