things i miss, being retired

this picture goes back to 2006, July in fact.

i worked for a company out of Swanton, Ohio, named Air-Ride, that had the DHL hauling contract.

i'd go to the DHL center about 15 miles from my house, they would load up the trailer, and i'd take "air freight"...yes..."air freight" from RI to Allentown. PA, at the Schantz Rd center...off route 101...??

a WAWA was at the corner, best dang deli, breakfast sammiches, and fresh coffee ever...across the intersection, is the Hershey industrial park

i had to wait for another "air freight load from Pittsburgh, switch out with them, and come on back

"about 10 hours there, and 10 hours back. couldn't be late, the day delivery trucks had to roll...paper logbooks, made it all happen.

i never been there myself, when they said I HAD TO GO for orientation, i told them to F off, you want a driver, i am here, you want a student, then hire him.

Although not retired i do miss driving semi's! I miss days on end of hard physical labor! I didn't mind working a 45-60 hour straight work day. No sleep and barely ate, but did stay hydrated. That was when I had alfalfa. When it's ready, it's ready and no time to waste. 100°+ days, but did have a/c maybe half the time?

I miss some of my co-workers. We were a pretty tight bunch and had some good times.
Other than that, I don't miss a thing about work.

Not retired yet but may be soon. I really don't care much for my present job working for the Department of the Army. I did love my job when I worked for the National Park Service under the Department of the Interior. But there was little chance of advancement there without moving somewhere else. And I find myself missing my commercial diving days, even though I was almost killed and crippled from an underwater explosion. Also find myself missing my time in the Marine Corps and the Army.

I miss most of the guys I worked with, we had a lot of fun and still got things done.
Could not do that now with all the young and gun foremen are all business and if your hair color changes, they don't think you can do your job anymore.

I miss welding. Loved doing it. Saw a lot of people who thought they were welders who really weren't. Noe , due to having COPD and being on oxygen , I can no longer weld. I also miss the money I use to make.

It turns out getting old does have some drawbacks. LOL

i miss being at sea,... well not really
but i miss the good, the bad and the ugly of active duty Navy aviation
retirement often finds me taking 3 days to do a 20 minute job as i get side tracked with other stuff
then other days the day is gone and i have completed tons of stuff that somehow was not done 3 days earlier

I miss our 3 car garage, boy was that awesome. It had a 4 foot pad that had my reloading stuff on. Now I back the truck out of the garage so I can move around.
We downsized that allowed us to get out of the Phoenix metro area and my wife could retire with me. A lot of my jobs were like getting a root canal every day, so I don't miss work.

Working for the Department of the Interior was one of the best jobs I ever had. Working for the Department of the Army isn't the worst job I ever had, but it is close. I used to actually look forward to going into work every day when I worked for the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Padre Island National Seashore. Something new and different every day. Can't say that about the Department of the Army, Corpus Christi Army Depot. Been here for over 6 years now. I've never seen such fraud, waste, and abuse as I have here in all my 18 years federal service. I had already started the process requesting disability retirement or finding me another position I physically can do. I'm disabled and can't do my present job anymore. I had wanted to continue to work for a few more years (I'm 59), but I think I'll jump on the chance for the disability retirement. Or if a RIF is in the works for my command, I'm pretty high up the chain, and they might offer me an early out, I'll jump on that. I'm glad you have a good experience where you are, but this place is BS and I wouldn't cry a bit if they shut it down. Sorry for the long post.
