This is why I don't trust carbon fiber in bike frames, or anything else.

Carbon fiber is used in modern airliners, autos. etc. because its light & strong.

Any metal/material can fail spectacularly when design parameters are exceeded.

I've stressed/punished the carbon forks on my bikes for years without any failure.

Just because the person took it beyond design limits, dont blame the equipment.

Everything fails at some point
EVERYTHING !!

so guys, that mini sub isn't the only one to have sunk recently - here is a bigger one, though unsure of the CCP use of carbon fiber

Reported back in July but just now confirmed

Not only was the carbon fiber used in an environment it probably should not have been, in a shape which is unconventional tocsay the least, tube instead of the traditional sphere used in the passenger compartment of submersibles, the material was apparently also expired carbon fiber which was no longer able to be used on planes. Expiration means what to stability, who knows. But one might think if one is a rebel and going to use a material in a way it has never been used, in a design shape never used in submersibles, one would at the very least want top shelf material...

Just me.

Carbon fiber is laid to stress on certain directions and is ridicuously strong, until you stress it against the grain. This is why when an F1 car meets a wall or other car a virtual storm of splitters is generated. When you build a cylinder that is subject to pressure from all directions the result is inevitable. This is why submersibles are typically cylindrical and made of steel. Ocean gate got plenty of feedback on the risks associated with their design.

BTW, if the F-35 and other modern fighter jets can be skinned with composites a carbon fiber bike can certainly widthstand whatever it is put through.

I have been listening to the Coast Guard inquiry and this actually shocked me. According to one of his best friends Stockton Rush knew what was going to eventually happen and did not care as it would make him famous. If this is true he was a sick sick dangerous man.

Must have been Kung Pao Shrimp. SPICEY HOT diner that night for the crew and the toilets got overused. You have to make sure the lid is closed when flushing on a submarine.
