Not just USPS, but just about every large business has thieves.
Airlines, cargo, truckers, stores, grocery.
Why prisons are full and Police Dept’s exist.
Why would USPS be any different than anywhere else

I'm more concerned with incompetence than theft. In the last few months I've had packages get lost in the system for weeks.
One was just a normal $15 item from E-bay. According to the tracking it sat in a sorting facility for weeks. Finally arriving after 25 days.
The other was some expensive gun parts. In this case the tracking had it going to 7 different cities multiple times each. It came to Memphis 4 times, but instead of getting my local Post Office, it went to another city hundreds of miles away, Then after 32 days it just mysteriously appeared in my mail box unexpectedly. Even today, months later, tracking still shows it "In transit to next facility".
Theft is rare. But stupidity and incompetence are a constant problem.

I've tracked packages that are heading my way that go from a processing facility 200 miles to the west go right past my area's local processing facility (not the Post Office) to another processing facility 300 miles to the east then have to come back the 300 miles to the same local facility then to the local Post Office.
And I've had packaged bouncing back & forth between SLC and Denver several times before it headed north into my state.

I read this earlier today, and if I remember correctly, she got no jail time .... why the hell not I ask! I always thought tampering with the US Mail was a federal offense. But in reality it's not the USPS, at least not this time. It's the route carrier. And the 'higher ups' did their part when they began to hear complaints ... except for no jail time!

I'm pretty sure this was the decision of the court. I don't think the USPS has anything to do with consequences and/or penalties. All USPS can do is to terminate and press charges. I'm actually amazed they were able to terminate her with as strong a union as they have.

I would agree with most of what was said here except the part about 'prisons being full'. I would agree that most are crowded, but I don't consider it full until they can't find room to lay down without fighting for it.

The USPS is one of the most inept agency in existence and the sad part is when you discuss issues with postal clerks at the post office they admit the system is broken.
It’s no wonder that UPS And FedEx are very busy and profitable.
I currently only order things from Amazon and demand that the delivery be made by
UPS first and FedEx second.
A good friend of mine is home bound and requires medication being delivered, the USPS lost his medication twice and both times requiring him to be hospitalized.
He now gets them from Amazon delivered by FedEx, everything paid for by insurance. Never an issue since.
It’s no wonder that UPS And FedEx are very busy and profitable.

When my gun parts got lost in the system both me and the guy who sent them went to great pains to try to get the mess sorted out. USPS has a form on their website to solve such issues. I filled it out multiple times, but when I tried to submit it, it wouldn't go through.
Phone calls and trips to the local Post Office were useless. The folks there were sympathetic, but all they could do was look up the tracking and tell us where the package was supposed to be at that time. There is no system in place to reroute it to the correct destination.
It was rumored that Trump got current Postmaster General Louis DeJoy appointed for the sole purpose of messing with the 2020 mail in vote. He messed up a lot more than that! He cut hours, removed public mail boxes, took out many sorting machines and cut costs in all the wrong areas. He really screwed up an already overworked system.
I'll give the PO credit. They move millions of pieces of mail every day. Most of which get to their destinations with no problems. But when they screw up, they do so royally.
Little known fact: most of Congress wants to end the USPS and go to private mail service. Many of them are heavily invested in other delivery companies. They stand to make a lot of money if that happens.
Its been estimated that if it should happen that the cost of mailing a simple letter could go up to $5 or more.
