Three Motor Officer Deputies Struck, 2 Dead,Palm Beach County

Ya, it's a sad situation especially before the holidays. One of them killed is a member of my law enforcement motorcycle club, the Defenders. Multiple chapters were meeting at the south end of Lake O this Saturday for a multi-chapter lunch. He was supposed to be attending, now it won't be the same happy get together we had planned.

people either drive like maniacs or are distracted with all the tech in cars today. terrible news.
Sometimes it's just a loose connection between the seat and the steering wheel. Before retirement I was a safety professional. I saw and investigated all to many accidents of all types. Part of the issue is lack of proper training (an internet training course in my opinion isn't training - refresher training maybe but training needs to include human interaction with a knowledgeable instructor). I believe respect is part 2. Respect for the rights of others to work in a safe manner and your individual wants and needs never take precedence over their right to go home at night. Prayers for the officer who is in the hospital.

I got some details from a friend of mine over there.

One Deputy had just finished a traffic stop on the side of the roadway. As he was getting ready to leave the motor stalled and lost all power. He called for the other 2 motor officers to come help him out. They arrived, and just after a lady was in the right lane and went to pass another car in the center lane, she lost it then over corrected and slammed into the back of all 3.

If my info is correct the one in serious condition was the lead, the one that called for backup. If so, he is going to feel so bad, survival guilt, because he called the 2 Deputies to him.

Sad.

I would say driving around with their head up their a.. and not paying attention. See speeding everyday here with cell phones in hand and nobody really cares until it happens to them.
Yessir, DWHUA is becoming more common. I drive an F250 with my headlights on all the time and I am astounded at the number of people who pull out in front of me where I have to put the binders on to avoid a collision. My question is, did they just assume I would hit the brakes, are they unable to judge speed and distance, or are they just oblivious? I live out in the country but get tailgaters, passing in no passing zones, phone surfers, and speed demons every time I make the trip to town. So many drivers just don't seem to give a damn.

For years now I have had vehicles that integrate the phone with the car radio. My phone is connected and if I get a call i can either accept the call with a button on the steering wheel but all I see is people with new vehicles still holding phones! Are they so stupid that they don't know how to connect them?

I hear you. My phone connects to my vehicle and I can answer calls and texts from the steering wheel. My phone stays in my pocket, or in my commute bag. I wil only answer calls from my sister, mom and husband, totally hands free.
I’m a passive aggressive beast and I will glare at people on their phones at traffic lights. Pisses me off.

I don't answer my phone even when I ain't driving.

Yep, same here. As a matter of fact, I bought a Head Unit with Bluetooth for my truck so I could do exactly that.

Driving to me is a job albeit one that we don't get paid for but there are enough distractions on the road as it is. Family and friends know that if they call me or text me and I don't answer I am either driving or if at work tied up with a call or something. They all know that and if it's an emergency they all know to keep calling or texting and then as soon as I can I safely pull over and address the matter. Just my two cents

The Sheriff said it did not appear the SUV driver was impaired or speeding, but swerved into the median to avoid a car in front of her that had slowed down. I'll bet investigation shows she was fooling with her phone just prior to all of that.
Maybe not…ever noticed that some drivers slam on the brakes when they see a police vehicle on the side of the road. As if that will save them from a ticket. Panic strikes deep in less alert drivers.
