Throwback Thursday: Shooting Steel-Cased Ammo In Your AR-15

I've run a lot of steel ammo through my 7.62x39 rifles (SKS, AK47, & AR15 platforms), and a very little through anything else. The only issues I ever encountered involved light-primer strikes in the AR platform. It was nothing that a $10 enhanced firing pin couldn't fix.

As far as performance and accuracy, I've seen the best results from Barnaul ammo. I've also had good results from Monarch (Academy Sports store brand). I've read that Monarch is actually re-branded Barnaul, but I've also read that almost all Russian ammo is sourced from a limited number of factories and is simply packaged by whichever company purchases it on any given day. I like to know that my guns can run steel, but only my guns chambered in 7.62 get a steady diet of it.

I try to pick up a box of aluminum and steel cased rounds for all of my firearms, just to test it and see if it will have problems feeding and ejecting it.

Only problem I have ever had is with my Ruger 22/45 mk III. And that was simply anything but round nose will jam while feeding and stovepiped.
