To Hell in a Handbasket

I was in LE for 42 years, a PI for 8, and have seen some heinous things both in the U S. And overseas. Evil has always been with us, battling it was the duty that drew me. But recent news reporting is disturbing to me in the frequency and deph of violence and depravity. Cultural divisions seem irrepairable.

Attempted assassination of Trump and murder of a bystander in PA. An adult killing his grandmother over a melted candybar. A guy sets his wife afire over a thermostat setting dispute. A man leaves his ill 4 y.o. son to die in a house flled with spiders and garbage. A guy drops a 4 year old boy on his head from a 2nd floor balcony. A shooting in a park gathering killing 2 and wounding 7, including an 11 year old child. The worst wildfire in California's history set by an arsonist. Multiple children stabbed to death in the U.K. Carjackings, robberies, murders abound, and the list just goes on and on. Not to mention the wacko LGBTQXYZ's seemingly becoming normalized.

The causes are many and complex, but it seems to me we are experiencing a crescendo of moral decay, lawlessness, depravity, and cultural violence. There has to be a point where responsible citizens stand up and say, "That's enough, dammit". But whatever the future holds for our society, one thing is for certain. Now is a time to be prepared to defend our families and homes and way of life lest our culture perish.

Very well stated. I feel the same. I am not a hard core pepper, but I have been taking steps and learning what I can do to keep my loved ones safe. Can’t wait to retire so I can dedicate more time and energy to it.

Crime has and always will be with us.
Its not gotten better, but now we just know about it with media at our fingertips instantly.

Jack the ripper
Kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby
Jeffrey Dahlmer
Mafia violence in the 1920s and beyond
Watts riots / LA riots

Prisons have been full for generations

We just know about it more quickly now

Thank you for your service @HayesGreener, but many will always need to follow in your footsteps

i always felt that the influx of immigrants, migrants, foreigners was the root cause of this moral decay.

"they" take with them from thier country, self entitlement, and the lack of respect, one must EARN first, not owed in any way.

thier way of settling a fight, is to shoot each other, or stab each other.

sure we had crimes for decades, but i too cannot recall the severity of them like they are now.

that's who i put all the blame on, the border crossing since around JFK's time.

First, thanks for your tireless dedication in service to your country and communities.

To your point, at some point in time it will become necessary to be proactive about fighting evil and salvaging our American culture and human rights. It won’t just be us against the “ bad guys”. Our government and its agents will not be working with us. They’ll be enforcing laws that will need to be broken to get the job done. So unless we plan on fighting our government and LEO as well as the bad guys it’s going to have to get to a point where the government is turning a blind eye if not embracing vigilantism.
Personally. The same as my response to the Boogaloo Boys advocating for open rebellion against US LE agencies, someone else is going to have to go first. My plans do not include killing or being killed by my own government.

Amen. We’ve lost our moral compass and are drifting. People are calling evil good and good evil. Heinous acts are now normal, and decent people are “weird”. Scary times. Unless somehow we get back on track NOW it’s only going to get worse. Keep your powder dry…

At 77 doubt I'll be around in the not too distant future. Our country has been in serious decline for way too long and I really fear what the future will look like. I don't have much if any hope that things will get better, probably worse.

Sit back and ask yourself:

Is this TRULY new, or are you just plugged into news sources that feed you events like this 24-7?

I suspect it’s the latter.

I put a lot of the blame on our ultra liberal educational system. Kids today are brought up in an environment where they think life should be fair, entitlement, anything goes, participation trophys and grades don't matter. They don't have to work to achieve anything and aren't taught basic human values. Then when reality slaps 'em up side the head, they have no idea how to deal with it and go nuts. Often resulting in senseless violence.

I was always plugged in to real world trends in my career and I agree that evil is not new. I also agree that the 24 hour news cycle keeps it in our face.

Some individuals' behavior has always been outside the bounds of social controls. What I sense is an increased tempo of atrocity in recent years. For example, I researched mass killings going back as far as Vlad the Impaler for courses I taught and they are nothing new, but the frequency today is alarming. Events that used to shock the collective conscience have become almost routine. What I sense is an indication of foundational societal rot that will be difficult to repair.

Events back in Vlad’s day didn’t make the “news” unless they were truly HUGE—enough to be in a historical record.

A kid burning his grandmother to death wouldn’t have been noticed, nor would most of the events you mentioned in your OP.

Today, though? If you show a tendency to look at news like this, you’re gonna get fed stories that confirm what you think, instead of things that challenge it.

It’s an unending echo chamber that only you have a chance to step out of.

The history of humankind and the grotesqueries perpetrated against each other since day 1 is absolutely appalling. Today, news from every corner of the earth gets delivered to our screens in a never ending stream constantly triggering our outrage. A mere 25 years ago we were blissfully ignorant of 85% of this type of content. IMO, to say we’ve never seen such depravity before is disingenuous.
