Vegas next week... any recommendations?

Well at age 58 I'm finally taking a trip to Vegas next week.

Already have the first day reserved for a helicopter flight to the Hoover Damm, then a flight through the Grand Cannon. Land with a driving tour then 2 hours at the gun range there. The rest of the time is pretty much in the city.

Not really a gambler, but plan on trying a little. Not really a big city fan either, my best trips are usually in a cabin in the mountains. But it's a bucket list trip...

SO, any recommendations or suggestions? (Going with the wife and meeting 3 old Army buddies and their wives there. So much drinking and story swapping.)

I used to work as a musician in Vegas a lot. I have a bass player friend, Andy, that lives there and works a lot with Dez Hoston and The Longwood Band, among others. Here's a link to their schedule: https://www.dezhostonmusic.com/ (Click the "Shows" link at the bottom of the page). Most of their shows are free, some are in the afternoon on Freemont street, and if you stop by tell Dez and Andy (the bass player) that BassCliff said "Hi!" They'll know exactly who your talking about. ;)

If you just want to wander around (indoors), look at pretty surroundings, take a stroll through the Venetian. You'll swear you're in Venice. You can even take a gondola ride in the canal. Lots of food and shopping.

The Mandalay Bay aquarium is pretty cool. Any of the Cirque du Soleil shows would be a blast, Beatles Love at The Mirage, or Mystere at Treasure Island, etc. I've even jumped off the Stratosphere Hotel a couple of times. The jump is pretty expensive though. ;)

i ain't been out that way since the early 1990's, when the casinos that are there now, never existed...

lots of darkness, then bright lights, then darkness again. as i traveled the road...spooky too....

bring lots of travelers checks, debit cards, hotels can put your money into the safe, typical watch out for scams, and people walking closely behind you.

other than the usual precautions?

at one time "working girls" could not go into a casino unescorted by a man...........

yeah, that has to be expensive, for the huge clean up...you know, after the SPLAT.....!!!!!!!!

never in a kabillion years for me..........

i'll "bet" the vegas odds makers are taking bets, on all those that do..!!!!!!

That's not a bungie jump. It simulates a skydive and lets you ride down on a cable connected to a big reel. I used to skydive every weekend. The Stratosphere Hotel "jump" is not the same but it's really fun. I would never bungie jump. That's dangerous!

Make sure you take in a show. It doesn’t really matter which one because they’re all pretty awesome. Enjoy the nightlife and do a lot of people watching. I like watching the pretty young things who get done up to the nines in the highest heels you’ve ever seen and a couple of hours later here the came, shitfaced, looking like they’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards with filthy bare feet because their feet hurt from the fancy shoes!

A great please to people watch and enjoy some fantastic food is the Peppermill Restaurant on Las Vegas Blvd, near Wynns. It’s like a diner from outer space and is open 24th on the weekend. Don’t go in before 11pm!

And for some out of town viewing take a drive up Mount Charleston. It’s a very pretty drive about 30 mins outside of Vegas.

You have many recommendations. The problem is not knowing your budget or tastes or interests. The Japanese flock to the gun range that rents full automatics, and if you don't live where that is possible, it can be terrific fun for a gun enthusiast. We love renting Ferraris to run up the highways toward St. George at 200 MPH and back but that isn't cheap either. Our favorite steak house is Prime in the Bellagio, or SW Steakhouse at Wynn Las Vegas but if money is of concern then try THE Steakhouse at Circus Circus or our long time favorite, Top of Binion's Steakhouse. Our favorite buffet is at the Bellagio, but a less expensive one is at The Flamingo which has the added advantage of their bird sanctuary as a view.

My best advice is not to gamble since you already stated you are not really a gambler.

There are lots of shows, some expensive (I once spent $1,400 on two tickets) and some near free or even free.
