What is SAAMI & Why Does SAAMI Approval Matter?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but before SAAMI, it wasn't that uncommon for a barrel to burst in your face.... ....doesn't happen too often after they came along...

I found it interesting when googling about 9mm Luger vs 9mm Parabellum, I found out they are exactly the same, and the name 9mm Parabellum had been copy righted, and SAAMI didn't want to deal with the copyright and for that reason 9mm in the U.S. is know as 9mm Luger.

Good article on SAAMI, good read for the new and seasoned shooter who really doesn’t know what SAAMI is or does

Not having an interest in hand loading or using +P in any caliber I’m confident in the safety factor in what I purchase for my hand guns in both range and defensive ammunition.
If I have a concern at all it’s what I have in .308 that was purchased when I had an AR10 which will now be used strictly in my only rifle an M1A.

That being said I already know that this gun runs flawlessly with 150 grain Sig Elite Performance FMJ
I did run heavier loads when I first started shooting it and ran into some feeding issues. Following shoulder problems and surgery last year I didn’t shoot it at all but I’m excited to get back at it soon.
My plan is to run these heavier grain rounds in groups of 3 or single shot to use them up and although I am slightly concerned with over pressurizing the chamber I’ll take my time and work through this Ammo slowly.

That was what I was getting at in my comments, it was an industry wide standards effort to assure you got what you intended and it would operate safely.

If you wanted to run +P, you could do it safely because of SAAMI, you just have to check the literature or with the manufacturer if the design includes the SAAMI specs.

includes the presssures for +P, I don't think SAAMI has specs for +P. I was past the edit option when I realized my comment was confusing....

Keep in mind, firearms are designed with a safety margin, to withstand a certain percentage over the max stress they are rated for..... ....the safety margin is for the rare defective round that produces higher than spec pressure, and reduction in strength with age, wear, damage and work hardening.... ...so you may get away with using +P in a firearm even though it was not designed for it, but you're cutting into the design safety margin, and as that margin degrades with age, wear, damage and work hardening, the +P may then exceed what safety margin you have left....

I would think the information would be beneficial for loaders especially those just starting in reloading.
i make sure i buy quality components, such as primers, powders and occasionally brass cases.

as for the bullets, in fact i boguht some from Berry's, but they do not mention SAMMI specs for the bullets, but for OAL of the reloaded round.

i follow 1 of the 4 reloading books that i have for reloading specs.

And there’s this, yeah that’s me holding a rifle from the final test area. Although just the barrel itself had already been proofed using a hot load Mossberg shot its completed guns again prior to packing. This one didn’t make the cut.

SAAMI does indeed have the specs for +P—in certain calibers only (in handguns, .38spl, .38 Super, 9mm, .45acp…there might be one or two others, but that’s all I know off the top of my head).

In those calibers +P means over max pressure but less than 110% max pressure.
