What Is the Maximum Effective Range of .308?

And by the way, the infantry says the max effective range of 7.62/308 is 900 meters. But the reason for that wouldn’t really apply to non military use or for hunting. It has more to do with how far you can light a fire.
That is correct; however, my USMC handbook stated that was for area targets. We were taught to use 300 yards for point targets.

I have an AR10 I like, but dang sure would like to get my hands on a M1A scout.

I have been drooling over one for a long time.
I have no regrets...

My wife offered to buy me an M1a for my birthday but I thought it was too much money for how often I'd shoot it.

I know, I know. Roast me now. I deserve it.
Get Tanker or Socom and you'll probably find yourself shooting it more than you think you would.

Really fun rifles to shoot and the shorter length makes them easy to handle standing, sitting, or prone.

I think “effective range” has far more to do with (1) the loose nut on the end of the trigger and (2) the rifle involved than the cartridge. I’ve seen guys with good rifles make some incredible shots on targets at Long range. I’ve also seen guys with more capable (potentionally anyway) rifles that couldn’t hit a barn door at 300 yards. A true “shooter” can accomplish a lot even with a lesser rifle. The guy that shoots a box or less a Year will never be as good as the dude that burns a couple hundred rounds/month

I’ve shot a .308 at 1000yds (1/2 mile + a football field, including the end zones), with open sights, and been on target.

I’ve also been in the rifle pits at that range, and I guarantee you, you don’t want to be on the receiving end.

So—if the shooter can put steel in target, it’s effective.

Right. I was thinking Tanker
I own a Tanker and I absolutely love it! The walnut stock is beautiful and it shoots really nice with the tritium sights. The Socom comes with a section of rail to mount optics that the Tanker doesn't have. I prefer the M1A irons over optics anyway as I typically only shoot out to 300yds with it at steel targets.

Mine is a Savage Trail Hunter
22" medium heavy threaded barrel.
Vortex Viper HD 5-25x50 FFP
800m isn't a really hard shot with handloaded ammo.
500m is pretty easy.
Not bad for a cheap gun.

I also have another standard 20" bolt gun and a 12" AR pistol.
