While moon clips were originally designed to hold rimless pistol cartridges, namely .45ACP, they’ve been produced for popular rimmed cartridges as well.
I like revolvers, but moon clips are generally a dealbreaker for me. I don’t mind having them as an option, but I hate when they are required in order to properly run the gun and extract empty casings. The basic simplicity of revolvers is why they appeal to me. Adding additional parts or components ruins the fun. I’m sure there are plenty of shooters who love them, but I’ve just never been a fan.
I have a Chiappa Rhino 50DS chambered in 357 Magnum. It came with 4 moon clips. Naturally I used them and i was indifferent about them. On one hand they held 6 rounds tightly that in an emergency I could easily slip into the wheel. On the other hand they are extremely difficult to load and unload. Another pro is all rounds come out at once with the moon clip no matter the angle. Compared to loose rounds that you have to hold the revolver straight up and down to extract or upside down as you plunge it. If you lose one they are extremely hard to find. So, personally I see both sides of the coin with them. For my personal defence rounds I use them for training absolutely not.
