Why 1911 or 2011?

The 1911 and the 2011. Why do people including myself choose them?

In short, it’s simple yet complicated.
It’s a Pistol for those who like an element of or go all the way into Old School.
It’s a Pistol for those who want something with imperfections that a skilled Tinkerer or Gunsmith can work into perfection. That’s the lure for me.
Others still like the history behind the 1911 and it’s evolution into what we know as the 2011. One wouldn’t exist without the other.

I like a 1911 that simply works out of the Box, and Springfield Armory has been my favorite of the bunch for the 1911. Then you have the Prodigy which is the evolution into the 2011 space. For me, I like the AOS system topped with the Trijicon SRO. I then add a SureFire X300 and then take them for a spin at the range. Any imperfections will show themselves while I’m giving them a go at the range. At that point I’ll take them apart, see where the imperfections are, then work on it. For 1911, I go to Wilson Combat for aftermarket parts that I hand fit into the Pistol. For the 2011, that honor goes to Evolution Gun Works Atlas Gunworks. I’m into the 1911 and 2011 because of that ability for skilled hands to truly make them into a true work of functional craftsmanship. My 1911 and 2011 are the latest in a long line of Gunsmithing and Building Projects. We will see where it goes from here.

I like the standard 1911. Its like the gun was built for my hand. Never cared for the 2011 feel.
Although I do own one double stack 1911. Its an older Para-Ordnance P-14. Lemme tell ya, 14 rounds of 45acp gets heavy. You can actually feel the gun getting lighter as the magazines empties. The weight change also makes the recoil feel different. Yeah, its kinda weird, but I'm gonna keep it. 😁
And yes, I'm well aware that most DS 1911s are in 9mm. But if you want a DS SA 9mm, get the real deal. A Hi-Power! (y)

Most people buying a 2011 like the modern amenities such as rails, Optical cutouts and the beavertail etc. Most Hi Powers, with probably one notable exception in the Girchan lack these things. But I am sure they will take your highly opinionated suggestion into consideration no matter how briefly... (y)

Outside of 1911s and 2011s, I’m a Glock Guy. My Springfield Operator AOS 1911 is my favorite out of everything I own. It is to me, the definition of Modern Retro. I chose the Prodigy in 5” because I wanted to experience the 2011 platform without going bottom of the barrel. For Pistols I either won’t have to do much to or nothing to, that’s what a Glock is for. Having grown up around the 1911, I wanted all the modern features but still the 1911 in .45 at its very core. That was a given. I also want a Garrison and a Mil Spec both in .45. Those are old school style 1911s that I’ll be getting just to enjoy for what they are. I have an original Springfield that was my Grandfather’s that he got back in 1937 via the Army and later bought from the Army after carrying it in Europe during WWII. He died in 1992 at 73. I think the Mil Spec would be as close to being a copy of Grandpa’s 1911 as I can get.

A Warrant Officer in my unit knew I had some experience with the M1911 so he asked me if I could take a look at one he inherited from his grandfather.
It was a Colt 1911. Not a A1. WW1 issue. The magazines had lanyard loops on them.
He didn’t know anything about the 1911 platform so I gave him a block of instructions. The pistol was in great condition for its age.
He asked if he should it. I told him it’s up to him. I also suggested that since it’s in great shape, has a low serial number and comes with the original holster and magazines he should hold off on firing it until he got it checked out by a gunsmith

neither in my case regardless of cartridge.

these fine-looking firearm does have my attention although my wrist (due to grip angle) might not like it! if not, my daughter will take it as it's her favorite cartridge (not caliber).

(with exception of being able to get a 357sig barrel)

this is nuts

Well, after owning a Double Stack Para-Ordnance P14-45, firing it during a visit to the range ( I put 100 230gr FMJ through it) then properly cleaning it then trading in for a Colt series 70 Government model .45 ACP, I can tell you from my experience and perspective that Yes, it looks like a 1911 but when I fired it it didn’t feel like a 1911.
It didn’t have that comfortable feeling that I had come to expect from a 1911. My muscle memory had to adjust to its girth and weight. After one range outing I realized that it wasn’t for me.
Lesson learned. For me, If it’s a.45 ACP pistol it got to be a single stack 1911.

This is what baffles me about the 2011 folks specifically the Staccato crowd. They are all about the Staccato and dumping Glocks and praising a 1911 that has some rework and holds more rounds yet refer to us as FUDDs if we like a wait for it…the same 1911 designed gun! I just don’t get it like they are the same thing

Sort of the ones that also criticize the “maintenance “ needed on a 1911 yet they are cool with awhile regiment of torque loctite battery stuff on a Red Dot!!!!

Don’t get it!!!

Well that’s just how it is. There’s no “One Size Fits All” when it comes to handguns and the calibers they come in.

I get that it’s just like dude they are the same freaking design. But Staccato made it “cool”

Not sure where fit in. I have a Staccato or two, yes with batteries, locktite, and red dots. I have a few 1911 operators in 45acp. Heck, I even have a wooden slingshot that shoots rocks.
One thing is for sure, they all put a smile on my face when I fire them.
Get what you like and have fun shooting it. Peace
