Why Choose the XD Mod.3 for Home Defense?

They're almost as bad as Taurus.

You have to think for yourself and not allow the opinion of a so social media influencer whose a shill form your opinion for you. There are thousands of comments in the video from actual users, and they overwhelming disagree with him. He received A LOT of push back. The general consensus of those in the firearm community, even members on GlockTalk and other popular forums, disagree.

The thing is, that was a hit piece video because he had an agenda. He, like most others, generally hot nothing negative to say about the Springfield XD or Springfield in general until the whole "Springfield supports gun control" thing went viral and everyone was outraged. It was cool to bash everything associated with Springfield. John released, and other influencers, released hit peice videos soon after that story went viral.

I want to make it clear that my reasoning isn't "XDs Suck".

I'm not a firearms afficionado. I used to be but I'm not now.

I own less than 10 guns and half of them are Glocks. When I was deciding on a primary carry/ work gun, my choices came down to Glock Vs. M&P.

I decided to concentrate on Glocks because the Glock 19 is the smallest gun on my employer's and the city's approved list for security guards. Had I 4 inch barrel Shield Plus been available at the time I would have chosen that.

My secondary reason was because the Glock 26 is smaller than the 1st generation M&P 9C
(Now called the 9 Sub Compact) but holds the same number of rounds.

I could carry a Glock 26 in the pocket of my uniform pants without anyone noticing. I can't do that with a 9C. And the 26. takes the same magazine as the 19.

I've never owned an XD and I'm fairly certain I never shot one.

I did research them before I bought my first Glock and I heard the stories of them locking up in high round count classes. I heard stories (from more than just John Corriea) about them being sent back to the Mothership with a live round in the chamber.
And I personally witnessed people not being able to get a good firing grip on them while shooting and not being able to fire them.

Long story short, I chose Glock. Even if the XD's issues were remedied, I already have a Glock (and and an M&P) . Why would I pay 300 plus (plus magazines and accessories) for a gun that (nominally) fills the same space as the gun I already own.

I actually prefer the M&P to my Glock 19. Otherwise I would have sold it when I bought my Glock 19 and I'm seriously considering making it my primary carry gun when I move to The Goat Ranch because I won't have need of the Glock 26

I heard the same complaints typically from striker-fire fans when they talk about 1911s and even the XD-M, and yet others have carried them for decades and swear by both platforms. Sounds more like a training issue if people aren't getting a proper grip on the draw, and not a platform issue. To compare a gun you never owned or shot to Taurus semiautos because of that is kind of crazy, but everyone is welcome to their opinion.

I'm not really a fanboy of any one manufacturer. I've pretty much owned them all. I believe you that some people had live rounds stuck in the chamber of their XD. We both are members on some of the same forums, but I've been there longer and am on a few more than you. That happens with every manufacturer, and is more than likely an ammo issue....

  1. Need help live rounds getting stuck in chamber.
  2. Glock 26 jammed with live round inside
  3. G17 Jammed with Live Round in Barrel
  4. Live round jammed in chamber....
  5. Live round stuck in barrel, slide jammed forward
  6. G19X Failure w. Live Round in Chamber
  7. G30 slide stuck with a live round in the tube.
  8. Gun Jammed With Live Round In Chamber!
  9. Glock 48 Round Stuck in Chamber (Slide won't rack back fully)
  10. Round stuck in the chamber. How do I remove it? Glock 19 gen 5
If you shoot enough, it will eventually happen especially if you're shooting whatever cheap ammo you can find. I could literally post dozens of cases involving Glock, S&W M&P, Sig, HK, Walther, AR15s, AKs, etc.... It's not something that's exclusive to the XD platform, and it's so not necessary to have to waste time sending the gun back.

There's multiple methods to clear that type of jam, but here's the one I use when it happens to me.

That’s funny, all the Glocks I now own or did own since 1996, not one ever jammed or any issues period….🤔🤔

Doesn't mean that others haven't had issues or makes their problemic experience any less valid. Glocks experience many of the same malfunctions that happen with other manufacturers whether it's user, ammo, or gun related. I've owned 7 Taurus handguns and 5 post lock S&W revolvers that I never had even one issue with, but I don't doubt for one second that everyone one else does not shares my personal experience.

True……

IDK Styx it almost seems like you're just not going to be happy until I agree with you. I'm not going to buy an XD. I have a Glock it does the same thing and it does it better.

I'd rather put the money into ammunition

Not sure how you came to that conclusion? I don't need you to agree with me or care if you buy an XD, lol. I never expected you to buy one, and we all have our preferences on what platform we think is the best. You brought up a couple of points about the XD, and I was simply adding to the discussion by clarifying a few things.

Serious question ….. how prevalent are XDs in competition? Like IDPA, combat shooting, etc.? I’m not a competitive handgunner and not planning to try that, but I’m curious about the use of XDs in that line of work, compared to say, Glock or M&Ps.

To my way of thinking, if a pistol is used and abused in that role, then that’s a box checked for me. It means it’s been vetted for long service life, parts durability, etc.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the link,Mike.

Despite some of the back and forth here, my opinion (and like at least one other thing, everybody has one!) is that SA has an outstanding product line with the XD’s. That they can sell the XD Mod 3 at the price point listed in the article and still be profitable is a little amazing to me. I appreciate what SA is doing, making an outstanding gun available to just about anyone. Thank you Springfield Armory!

I don't think the regular XD's are really competition guns. They are more EDC/home defense.

Just get a Glock........
If Glock would fix their grip angle I would. High stress situation I want a gun that naturally points at the target for me, not at the beam over the doorway.
Not a Glock hater - just different needs for different wrists. And yeah, I know - If I trained enough with it... and then I would be pointing low with every other pistol and revolver I won and have to become a glockfanboy only shooting glocks!

Mr Johnson also has to remember that there are still many jurisdictions where while you can use any gun, using an AR or shotgun could cause you more hassles legally. May win in the end, but it may cost you lots of money to get there vs just using a pistol.

They’re not THAT bad.

I would take an XD over a Taurus, or a Ruger auto…and I am NOT a fan of XD’s, at all.
Maybe I should be a little embarrassed here but I own a Taurus TH9C, a Springfield Armory .45 XDE, and a Ruger P90. I was the Assistant Rangemaster for a municipal LE qualification range 84 - 88. Owning a Taurus was totally "ghetto" during that period. Many moons later after Taurus bought Beretta, they started to produce a decent "throw away" ie the TH line. I am pretty agnostic when it comes to firearm brands. Aside from the known absolute garbage brands, I own most of them. I do, however, only carry my tried and true for edc and have only "certain" firearms at the ready for home defense.

So if you do something your own research find out this is a real thing. I had a neighbor kid when I was growing up I think his name was Barry something or other but every day his mother bought him something new.

And everyday when that happened he got that dopamine Rush. Wherever he's at today unless there's been a major change in his life he is still pissing money away Jason that dopamine rush.

And with all due respect I think that's the reason some of you guys have five or six gun safe stuffed to the gills.

And I think that's why so many of you own McRibs
