windows 11 update 24H2

The only Windows computer I have is for gaming. That said, I know it did some fancy updating stuff recently only because last weekend I played a bit and things were weird. I couldn’t speak for anything else really..
I won’t reply on this, I’ll behave myself…..but…..nope, won’t do it….😬

In "Settings", then Windows Update, there's a link to "check hardware requirements" for Windows 11 compatibility.

If your computer doesn't have the capability to run Windows 11 then you can't upgrade.

BTW - Windows 10 will not be supported (no regular monthly updates) some time in Oct. 2025. There's a rumor that one could still buy support for a fee for at least one more year.

I dumped my windows 10, did not go to windows 11 due to excess issues and went to Linux Ubunta on a strong Mini PC with lots RAM, high resolution graphics card, solid state HD, plenty of USBs(reg and mini's), 2 HDMI 2.1 and 2 Ethernet connectors to handle cat 7 cables speeds.

I did the 24H2 KB5046740 update earlier this week.
Afterward there were a couple of other updates applied that I had already installed before,
one was for the DotNet.

It appears it is more of an upgrade install, afterward I had a Windows.old directory.
Took close to 20GB of disk space, that later was removed with Disk Cleanup.

I haven't noticed anything huge that changed so far.

Do you have Windows 11 installed on an SSD drive?

It seems the SSD drives can lose read performance when the data is not written for a long time.

I have an older Windows 10 laptop with an SSD drive that became very slow over the last couple of years.
I recently ran Spinrite 6.1 on the SSD drive and the drive performance is vastly improved.
(I've used Spintite for about the last 30 years)

Watch this video on Spinrite.

yes both machines are SSD
the win 10 got a new hard drive 2 years ago ssd 500 g
it was less costly than a disc ??
the win 11 is also ssd 500 gb
so far this morning its running very stable and faster than it was last week
i do need to do a disk clean
i get screwed up with one drive often and somehow get duplicates downloaded

yes installed it on one of my pcs - it is faster to load and a few changes here and there. One is the removal of wordpad, the quick reader of plain docs that is /was superior to notes or other txt readers. You can reinstall wordpad, as I did, if you know how.

anyone updated to this version yet?
my computer keeps reminded me its available, but the comments of whats new seem vague
thanks
i got a new laptop with Win 11, so i just set it to automatic updates, unless i go and turn it on right now, i can;t say if it's been installed or not.

and i miss Win ME

like a freakin' hole in the head!!!!!

The wife and I both have identical laptops about 4 years old with Win10 Home and continued to get those update to Win11 requests. But neither of us wanted to do it since we didn't want to go through another learning curve. But, somehow she got an update to 11 on hers and now our computers were not the same. And since I knew nothing about 11, I couldn't help her with various problems. So, in desperation I finally upgraded mine to Win11 as well. Now, even though I'm trying to get a handle on it, I can't do a damned thing to either of our computers yet. And now I can't even find the long list of programs down the left side of the screen including 'System Tools' (I think that's what it was called) to do things like 'Disc Clean-up', etc. My laptop is now loading almost every page twice, regardless of what it is ... whether Amazon, Email, etc and I have no idea what's causing it or how to fix it.

So, can anyone help me locate the list of admin tools and other programs that used to be listed down the left side of the screen in a long menu format? And please understand I was born virtually before B/W TV was readily available to the general public so my computer knowledge and skill is very limited. I still have a hard time just spelling 'IBM' ;). Yeh, that's how bad it is so please don't throw out a bunch of technical jargon that I can't possibly understand. I'm trying to learn, but it doesn't come easy for us 'old schoolers'. Thanks in advance for any help. jj
