Um yep I would say that lil guy needs a better home. Then he can go about eating ticks and other stuff we don't want around.

Cool animals they are way misunderstood. They eat ticks, do not get rabies and are immune to most common poison snakes, have heard they are why there are some venom antidote. And they are not vicious, its show.

Yep. I like having them around.

From time to time opossums come to our back porch to share in the bounty of cat food Mrs Greener puts out. The cats are not too sure what to do about it so they act like they don't see the opossums.

One of them that was a regular was missing his left ear. My daughter who was an art major at the time named him Vincent. Vincent disappeared a few years ago, we kind of miss him.

Possums have their good and bad points. They eat ticks and other insects. They aren't dangerous to humans. But they also like to raid chicken coops and garbage cans. They can be a nuisance.
I had a Wildlife Officer tell me once that possums are such nasty tasting critters that most predators won't touch them unless absolutely starving. Their only real natural enemy is the automobile.

Don't forget Granny, she made a mean Opossum Pie

About 25 years ago my first lab (black lab Riley), came back to my door with an adult possum (acting dead) in his mouth. Scared the crap out of me....I yelled, he dropped it and came inside. 10 minutes later the possum was gone. They are VERY good at playing possum (dead). I am thankful that neither my dog, not the possum, got into it....possum teeth are BIG. Sorry for calling them "possums"..."o"possum wasn't used were I grew up. I'd never intentionally kill one. It's kinda cute how their babies cling to momma's back and belly when out and about.

One of the downsides of doggy doors where your dog can come and go at will. You never know what your dog might bring inside.

Our neighbor about 20 yrs ago was a single woman when we lived in our first home . She was not a pleasant lady attitude wise . She would go on long week end trips and leave the dog unattended with food/water/ doggy door. Dog would sit outside and bark at all hours. Golden retriever. Felt bad for the dog.
Anyway, she leaves on a trip. About 3am the dog is barking, growling and going nuts. Look out and see a possum on the fence hissing down at the dog but it wont run away down the fence. My dog starts going nuts.
I grab a shovel to “shoo” it down the fence and go away. It wont move .😡
10min later and dang thing is still not moving and hissing at everything. Dogs are going beserk.

So after a bit, i push it over the fence into the other dog. Snarling, etc and then all quiet and i look over the fence to see the dog take it thru the doggy door and into her house. My wife asked when I return to bed if I got rid of the possum. “Yep”.

Monday morning the carpet cleaning truck was there for hours. Following week end, a carpet crew is there with new carpets.

She hired a pet sitter after that
🙂😉

The shrew learned about karma at the expense of the opossum
