Wooly Pully Sweaters

How many of y'all out there have a genuine British 'Wooly Pully' sweater?

I've been mildly interested in getting one for probably 25-30 years, but I've never been much of a sweater guy until I moved way far North, close enough to Canada to spit across the border. Then I realized why the Brits, Scots & Irish love their sweaters... The UK, including London are all north of the 49th Parallel. The climate here is cooler than Chicago or NYC.

I like this climate because I'm a cold-weather guy and spring/fall here offers more days where I can carry concealed without a full coat. I went with the OD military version because everything here is national and state forests, but you can get other colors in addition to black, navy, brown, tweed... I'm very glad I caught this on sale and in stock. Here's the link if you're looking for one, too: militaryuniformsupply.com/search?q=wooly+pully&limit=48

I am sure I have an old one kicking around. We weren't issued them...we had to buy them at Base clothing stores. I had a green one, before Canadian Forces decided to change up uniforms yet AGAIN. I don't think the blue ones were wool.

We were authorized to wear them as an outside garment until late 70s in Germany. Wool sort of but not as itchy to me as other wool clothing and were very popular. Later we could wear them underneath our uniform shirt. I don't know what happened to mine, but I probably outgrew it. The most itchy thing I ever wore was during the Gulf War when they dug into old Korean War stocks and issued us white longjohns. I wouldn't wear them on a bet today. Pure torture.

I had the USGI version but having to dry clean it became an expensive pain in the ass.

Several years ago my wife found this in a thrift store in Colorado Springs.

It's called a Gillie's Rain Sweater. Apparently Gillie's was a high-end fishing gear company. I'm not sure what it's made of. I'm sure it's synthetic because it's water resistant. But it's quite warm.

The retailer I linked to has a tweed version, very academic-looking.
This is the only sweater I own, was my dad's used mainly for hunting and I still use it during hunting season. It's not exactly like this, an older version. I am not big on long sleeves when not directly outside, don't like clothing or gloves tight on wrists, but yet I love a watch go figure, lol. I wear a tshirt under long sleeves stuff and take it off when I can. I used to love flannel shirts and wore them sleeves rolled up off wrists. Do not even have any of those any more.

Must be like Jerimiah Johnson said... Grown particular?

I had one and it was great if you were going to be outside in the cold. If you came into a building it was way too hot.
I made a mistake and ran it through the drier and it shrunk about 2 sizes.
I didn’t replace it because I couldn’t afford it at the time.
