4.0”. I have a box of Federal JHP +P.

Your answer is yes, the XD Mod2 in a 4" will shoot the +P ammunition just fine. As long as it meets SAAMI specifications. With ultra-compact pistols or short barrel revolvers, +P ammo can often improve terminal performance and can be a good thing. Richard Mann In the case of the 9mm Luger cartridge, SAAMI set the MAP at 35,000 psi.

However, the XD MOD2 4" does not fall into this category. So, question is.... Is +P necessary?

Personally, if you are using a quality ammunition like Speer Gold Dot, or Federal HST, I see no need for the +P.

The box of +P was given to my by a friend who couldn’t use it. My concern was it safe in my pistol. I normally would not consider buying +P ammunition.

Most modern handguns will handle +P, but using it habitually will obviously wear stuff out faster. And there is very little if any advantage to it.
