No sir never lubed anything inside the magazine.
I did some additional searching on the interwebs, learned a couple things
#1 Found another user reporting same issue, same round, same firearm.
#2 Reviewing the XDS manual, SA recommends to install the mag and load with the slide release. Alternatively can hand actuate the slide but warns against riding the slide to load for it could cause jam or misfeed. That's pretty important as SA calls it out with a big red exclamation and caution label in the manual.
Hopefully SA can provide some corroboration and add additional recommendations.
For now going to remove Hornady ammo and dedicate those rounds to another 9mm platform, I've got some Federal premium JHP I can use or try out in the XDS. Will plan on cycling through some of the Federal rounds at the range before Christmas.
