Yet another solution in search of a problem…

Well I see Winchester has now brought out the “.21 Sharp” ( basically a .22 LR worded with a sub caliber bullet seated inside the case. ). Frankly I can’t see this doing anything that an existing rimfire doesn’t already do. IMHO this is yet one more cartridge introduced to sell more rifles with higher priced ammunition. I can’t see this doing anything a .22 LR, a .22 WMR or a .17 HMR can’t already do equally well except help drain shooter’s pockets of $$. In the last decade or two there have a ton of “new” rounds introduced (most of which have disappeared since leaving owners of firearms chambered for them struggling to find and paying through the nose for ammunition. I’m all for development and advancement BUT “new” should be “improved” in some significant way. One of the few nee rounds to succeed is the 6.5 Creedmore-it’s great and popular BUT it really won’t do anything that ancient 6.5 X 55 Swede or a .264 Win Mag won’t do, albeit using a shorter case. Realistically nothing really “new” ballistically has came along in a LONG time. Metallic case ammo has been around a long time, and there’s been a ton of development over the decades, so there are few, if any, truly”new” opportunities. The laws of physics haven’t changed😏

I’d like to see a .357 SIG Maximum (10 mm necked down to 9 pushing a 124 grain pill at 2,000 fps out of a 6” barreled handgun-That would get my attention😊 (‘Course the recoil’s probably be too much for an old man, so make mine gas operated). Oh, and it’s needs to be under 20 Oz and sized like a Hellcat🙄

You were literally describing the 9x25 Dillon ...... Until you got to the 18oz Hellcat size

Exactly. IF a round offered something truly “unique” then ok. But if it’s just a different package with the same performance as something that’s been around for years, why bother?

I greatly feel that way . But there are rational reasons. Just as there has been over the decades / centuries. And probably half of what we think of as Tried & True , were themselves an upstart substitute for the previous generation .

Grendel and Creedmoor exist, because the respective AR platforms are now the Norm . And once they reached a critical mass of popularity , they migrated to bolt actions , etc . Because today you can walk into any gun store , and buy quality Ammunition at competitive prices , 6.5x55 , .264 , .260 , not so much .

The explosive popular .350 Legend and .400 Legend essentially duplicate the .351 and .401 WSL . Except for the being adapted to today's most popular platforms , and readily available ammo . ( Squint just a little bit, and between the Legends , they cover the ground of probably a dozen 1800's Levergun cartridges. )

Squint just a little bit , and the 1911 duplicated the .45 Schofield. Except for that Semiauto vs Top Break Revolver thing .

The ( now disgraced)
40 S&W duplicates the .38-40 , Except for the Combat Tupperware vs SAA thing . And ammo availability & cost .

.30 SC , and .327 Mag , and .32 Mag were all reinventions of the .32-20 .

I agre, there “are” exceptions, typically because of a newer platform (say “AR”), or changes in hunting refs (straight wall cartridge states for deer)., but a lot are just “new” for the sake of new (sell new rifles/pistols to work with new cartridges.

Old school cliche :

You don't ever * need * anything other than. 22LR , .38/ .357 , .30-06 , and 12ga .

And that would be 98% true statement.

The new wave equivalent would be :

.22LR , 9x19, .223 (5.56) , and .308 .

More like 88% true , only because I still value shotguns .
