She wasn't a "smuggler." But she was absolutely stupid in carrying what she did into Russia.
As far as the Russians were concerned, she was a golden bargaining chip that fell into their lap and a trumped-up charge was all it took to seal the deal. They've been wanting to get Bout back for some time, and they absolutely got the upper hand in this deal.
Absolutely.I object to Griner being described as wrongly held, falsely imprisoned and the like. She was caught with drugs, convicted and incarcerated. This was not someone who was innocent and should not be portrayed that way. I don't know about Whelan, but he is/was a Marine and has been held for years. I heard we had a choice between him and Griner. If we needed/wanted to make a deal, it seems we made the wrong choice.
And we are more than ever before the laughing stock of the world. She wasn't a "smuggler." But she was absolutely stupid in carrying what she did into Russia.

I'm well aware of what she was charged with, and I'm by no means suggesting that she was "falsely imprisoned" or innocent. She was absolutely stupid for taking what she did into Russia, and she should have known there would be consequences. I have zero sympathy for her. But three vape cartridges that had cannabis oil is hardly "smuggling" in any real sense of the word - it's trumped up hyperbole. "Posession of an illegal substance" would be a lot more accurate. They exaggerated the charge to use her as a bargaining chip.Brittney Griner Sentenced to 9 Years in Russian Prison for Drug Smuggling

I can understand your feelings even if not your assertion. She was born an American citizen even though she may be an ass about it. The 14th amendment makes that so for her, as well as many others who should not be made citizens based simply on birth. The privilege of citizenship in this country should have to be earned in some fashion. Just a quick look at our southern border right now will surely show there's no other country anywhere in the world where more outsiders want to be.I don’t agree with you she is not an American if she chooses to not stand for the flag they should left her ass there to riot
That pretty much describes the situation we find ourselves in today. It's sad, sad, sad what ideology the last few generations of kids have developed ..... or been taught.I am proud, very proud, to be a citizen of the United States of America. I have spent my life here and realize the sacrifices many have made to make that possible, all the way back to the founders. It hurts me deeply when people behave like Ms. Griner and many other athletes. I blame our educational system that has failed to teach folks like her what it means to be an American. So, it is very easy for them to be used as pawns in a game they just don't understand. Sad.
