Youth gone awry-murder at a track meet

I dealt with so many of these feral kids in my career. I think the thug formula is fairly consistent. Fatherless children, no impulse control and no appreciation of logical consequences, no respect for laws or authority or societal rules, marginally literate or illiterate, raised in a culture where hate and violence are default settings for all disagreement. It is so frustrating because a lot of these lost children are intelligent with potential but their destiny is prison or death at a young age. It is a pattern that is largely ignored by the media and elected officials and is a self perpetuating culture of violence.

Several years ago (at my wife’s urging and because if she was there, I had to be there anyway), I got involved with our local literacy council. Similarly, we got involved with directly supporting our local PD, taking snacks and drinks to the department headquarters for patrolmen and officers to show our appreciation for what they do for us (local fire department too). I am not “saying” this to pat myself on the back, but to tell how much these activities changed my thinking. Now, I fell sorry for and responsible for letting our society treat a segment of our people in such a way that many of them (not all!) feel they have no alternative other than to follow examples in their lives and go down the path this young man (and yes, now thug) have gone. So sad, and so stupid for a senseless tragedy like this to occur. We can do better.
