Question About 2011s (AKA Double Stacked 1911)

Hi all, I am late to the party here, but my question is, are 2011s worth buying if you are just an "Average Joe" non-competitive shooter? Ok so I have been trained with my two pistols for months now, my Springfield "Defender" 1911 and my Taurus TH9C (9mm). I have gotten very good at both pistols and I EDC both alternating between the two. My wife and I love going to the range and having fun and training to holster and re-holster our pistols, (she has a Bersa Thunder 380 that's Pink) and quick shooting drills. Recently I noticed a few places around me area have some pistols on sale (Spring Sales). There's a great variety of firearms available for some great prices, but I was really interested in a 2011. I have talked to a few Gun shop workers in my area and they all seem to have different views on the subject. Some say they are just over priced "toys", some say they are "only" for competitive shooters, others say they are good but you have to pay lots for a "good one".

So I wanted to ask the member here what you all think about them, and are they a justifiable buy?

NOTE: I the firearm I am looking to purchase isn't necessarily going to be for EDC (though it could be it's just not my main focus), just a fun plinking gun for the range and to practice with and for use in home defense.

For all the Turkish gun fans (killer price):

I would love to shoot a Tisas I heard great things about that company but I swear no one in my area has one, and when they get them in they get sold immediately, regardless of price.

So the one in my area that is currently on sale is the Rock Island Armory 2011 with Holosight. Sorry don't have the picture of it.
So, the RIA 2011’s aren’t the same as, say, a Prodigy. They are a lot beefier in the grip, and use the Para-Ordnance pattern magazine.

That being said, I have both a Springfield Prodigy and a RIA Match Ultra, and I much prefer the RIA for half the price.

Definitely get it.

Yeah I did hear that, and from the reviews, I have seen it's a decent firearm for the price and it's also on sale. I appreciate your input.

I say do your research, if you decide on a 1911DS or 2011 that you like, buy it and enjoy it. It will be a good choice for you AND your wife. Be prepared, no matter what you buy, there will be fanboys of another brand waiting to "hate" on it. As far as over priced range toy, over priced for one may be right in that sweet spot for another.
A word of warning, once you dip your toe in the 2011 pond your entire leg is sure to follow. Good luck and have fun.

My TISAS Carry DS is a great gun. I have about 800 rounds through it and it’s been trouble free. Did a minimal amount of polishing and cleaning up the inside of the plastic grip module and tuned the sear spring and the gun has a 3lb pull and is extremely accurate.

I have been looking at 1911DSs for a everything handgun but mainly a CCW. I fondled a Prodigy and it "fits" great in my hands. And with "upgrades", changes that i can do has put 1911DS on the top rung of my life's ladder.

I've also looked at Tisas and RIA 1911DSs and both seem good/great guns for good prices. Heck if i could find/get used 1911DS parts i would build mine.... lol...

All the parts to build a 2011/1911DS are out there. Did you know you can call Springfield up and buy a prodigy grip model for $40? It’s not listed on their site, you just have to call CS.

Used parts are a different story, but you can build a quality 2011 easily.

Thank you...

I have been looking through manufacturer websites if they have a buy section to see if/and what parts are "offered" and none show any "main" parts (like grips or slides) are available.

So I have 7 of these high capacity 1911 platform guns.

My favorite are the two Wilson Combat EDC X9L and X9 Experior I have. Bought both used, in almost new condition.

Next would be a Dan Wesson DWX Compact. Like it and uses the same mags as my CZ SP-01 Tactical

I also have a Springfield Prodigy that works great now. One of the early ones, needed work, never sent to SA, did it here.

A Rock Island Tac Ultra, good shooting gun, definitely the heaviest of the 7.

A Girsan Witness 2311 .... Total POS

And just recently bought a Tisas DS Carry, much smoother than expected and the got a great deal under $500 for it NIB

This thread sparked my interest.
So much so I ordered me that duty B9R listed by mikep. (Thank you!)

Now I'll just wait to see if I get the gen 1 or gen 2 delivered to me.

I called them and got the gen 2 sku from the rep but looking at all the mismatched SKU's and UPC codes by other internet vendors I'm not 100% sure which I'll get. Both have individual features i like.
So, we'll see which one shows up.
It'll be my first 19/2011. 😁
