The old manual locking hubs were certainly more reliable but not so good when yer stuck in the middle of a water hole or big mud pit, and yes i have been both. sink up to yer tushi gettin out to lock up the hubs. i buried a trailer and truck load of firewood one time and i mean buried. was in the old Ford with manual hubs. after i got out to lock them up i was a mess. wouldn't have mattered anyway, i had to use the winch with a snatchblock to get out. luckily i had a big oak in front of me. i did look before i entered to get the wood cause i knew it was going to get stuck coming back out loaded.
Been there, done that with my 77. Only draw back of manual locking hubs

Guys , you don't wait till you are stuck in the mud to lock in the manual hubs. If you are going off road you lock the hubs before you get off the main road. When you see a bad spot coming , you pull the lever and keep on going. No reason to be getting out in the mud , after you are stuck , to lock in the hubs.

Well, sometimes in the dead of summer down a hard packed dirt gravel logging road in Maine doing 35mph, you encounter a low spot that the logging trucks wallowed out.. you dont want to be running 4x4H at 35mph on a hardpack …
no worries.. I can make that with the speed .. 😫🫣🤔😬😬

I didn't say anything about having the transfer case locked in . I said the hubs should be locked in. That way when you see that low spot , and are running 35 MPH , you can pull that lever to 4x4 high and keep on trucking . Easy peasy. :)

Edit to add: Or when you see that low spot in time you can stop and go to low range 4x4 if you don't have enough horsepower under the hood.
