9mm for Personal Defense – Insert Argument Here.

In 2015 the FBI’s ballistic research program began to take a second look at some of the new 9mm ammunition.

As a base for performance, the FBI mandates that the bullet must penetrate at least 12 inches in 10-percent ordnance gelatin, and it must do so even when encountering a wide array of barriers. They found that modern 9mm ammunition, specifically Speer Gold Dot G2, delivered impressive terminal ballistics. Performance that slightly surpasses that of the .40 S&W. With these findings, the 9mm became more favorable for personal defense scenarios.

As in most things in life, we have to make choices regarding which caliber provides what we think we need with the least amount of compromise. For most new shooters, 9 mm fits pretty well for personal protection, given a choice. Having more data helps if a person is struggling with that decision. Thanks for the link, Talyn.

I can't pinpoint what it is/was that made me start trusting 9mm. I was always a .45 guy. I once had a guy try to give me a 9mm and I turned him down. " I don't want no F'ing 9mm" or something like that.

It was probably the VP9 that changed my mind.
Same for me. Never thought I would become a 9mm fan, but I did. First was a Hellcat RDP, then changed out my EDC to a HK VP9SK. And then there is the wife's S&W EZ 9mm. But there is still disdain for the .40 cal. I don't want one, and certainly don't want to have to add another caliber of ammunition to the grocery list.

My first striker fired handgun was a S&W Performance Center Shield in .40. Because at the time I still had no faith in the 9mm.

There's nothing wrong with it. It's accurate, I don't find it particularly "Snappy" and I shoot it well. It's probably been about 3 years since I shot it.
