Benchmade benched, at least temporarily

Sld1959

Ronin
I might move it to the practice squad and try to figure out the failure, but for now the Myerco once again is in a very familiar spot on my pocket.

I carried a Bolt Action for close to 30 years I guess, the myerco version for at least 10. They have always been utterly reliable and easily ambidextrous. The Benchmade took its place three years ago until the Microtech took top place 2 years ago. But the Bugout rode edc in my work pants around the homestead since then, until this morning.

Got dressed went out and was doing chores, reached in pocket to get knife and fingertips, darn lucky, lightly brushed against a very sharp bare edge. Dang I shivered thinking how bad that could have been.

I have heard over the years about the biggest danger with tip up carry is occasionally, rarely, the blade can get opened in the pocket. Now I will admit being the knife nut so long I arrogantly put it down to user error, they probably loosened the pivot, I on the other hand slightly tightened the pivot. It would not happen to me, until it did...

This has me a bit wary, hell very wary, why, how, damn that could have been bad. So, back to the reliable tip down Myerco. At the very least until I figure it out, if I do..

Your situation is the reason I stopped carrying my Kershaw launch 6. I cut my index finger twice and had to go to the hospital the first time . After that I was very careful before I would reach into my pocket until the day I was in a hurry and it nicked me a second time. I decided that was going to be the last time it got me under those circumstances .
I love the knife and it is laying here on my desk as I type this response but I will never carry it in my pocket ever again.

This is the kershaw I have . the button sticks out from the body of the handle a good deal and there is no safety.

I have a Benchmade Barrage. It can be carried in right or left hand pocket by changing the clip.
Most important it has a locking button. Not the fastest, but then I don't get into many knife fights.

From the clip position on your Bugout it appears you are carrying it Tip-Up with the blade opening facing in towards your pocket. If you reposition the clip to the other side so that the blade opening is facing out towards your pocket it will eliminate that problem. That way even if it was to come open a bit your hand would only brush up against the bottom of the scales. Worst case the tip would snag your pocket as you pull it out. The way it is positioned now, if carried in the right pocket, your hand could snag the tip as you reach in your pocket if it was slightly open.

Yeah, no thanks. I have already changed it back to right hand carry. But if it opened once it can agsin and it's just not worth rhe possibility of getting cut. Sure as you say most likely it will be positioned where it won't cut, but.. it would not be impossible.

So back tip down carry for me. But that's only when I sm not carrying an OTF which I do more often than not these days. These 4 take care of my left hand carry these days currently

thank you though

I confused how this could happen! I carry tip up also, the back of the blade sits against my pocket so there is absolutely no way for it to open. And I never stick my finger in my pocket. I use my pointer finger to kind of slide the knife out and if it did open it would stick my pants first and not come out. I’m just confused what happen to the op.

That’s the only thing I can figure is blade in !

Blade orientation and if the spine will lay against a seam is dependant upon several factors what hand it will be used with and where in the pocket it will be carried.

If you look closely I have it set up for left handed use carried IN THE REAR of the pocket which put the spine against the back seams or the pocket. I prefer it to the front seam carry.

As far as how it opened in that position, well now you know my conundrum...

I gotta admit, you lost me at 'Benchmade'. They've been dead to me ever since their incident helping steppers destroy confiscated firearms. I have a few EDC knives, all different brands. My main is the Gerber FAST06, which has a locking switch that absolutely prevents tip-up opening (or for that matter, tip-down opening). The rest are good brands, well-known for quality etc., but they're fixed blades. The only other folder is a tiny little Sheffield that I only use for opening envelopes.

You realize those were firearms used in crimes that couldn’t be put back into circulation and not “ confiscated firearms” right ?

I had a compass EXACTLY like the one shown. That was 40+ years ago so I don't remember who made it. Good memories!
