California Raising Background Check Fee's 500%, Get Ready

I should clarify. Tennessee doesn't actually use the FBI NICS system. We have our own instant background check system run by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. They charge $10 per check.
NICS has become the common term for background checks everywhere so I inadvertently used it.

So, I take it that other states don't charge for a background check when you purchase a firearm? Or do they just include it in the price?

Back to my original question. Is this new California fee just for ammo or do they charge $5 on a firearm purchase?
Most FFL dealers charge a fee for the transfer, which includes the BGC. The state doesn’t charge for it.

Is this just for ammo or is that $5 background check fee the same for buying guns?
Here in Tennessee there is no check for ammo, but the NICS check on a firearm is $10.
ammo background check, (part of the prop 63 ammo background check) from what i gather.....that 500% up charge basically amounts to a fee of $25.00...since originally the fee was only $1.00...and that ammo you buy (online) has to be sent to an FFL dealer, not your house......instore purchases, you take home from there.

no fee for an ammo purchase here, just a CCW permit, or a RI state Blue Card (almost like FOID card).

Fee going from $1 to $5 for ammo background check. That sucks, but if you live there, get bulk deliveries so the cost per round is infinitesimal. Fight against all you can besides voting anti's out of office. California was such a nice place, but I have no desire to travel there.
AZ used to be bright red, but too many Lefties have moved here. I hope I never see the day it turns blue. In the meantime, I enjoy my guns frequently.

Two US senators and the Gov are dems, most mayors dem - and it's not blue?, it's at least aquamarine like the lapis lazuli found in the mountains
They have the same problem TX will soon have. All those marxists, socialists, communists leaving CA move into the cities of other states to the point they outnumber the R’s, and they gain lots of 🫏 seats, local, State and US. They aren’t happy with completely destroying California, they want to bring their nonsense to other states and don’t have a gnats brain to realize doing the same things they did in CA will cause the exact same problems elsewhere. Unless, of course, that’s their intentions in an attempt to ruin the entire Country.

that would work out best, to buy in bulk, otherwise 1 box of ammo for say $12.00 (9mm) then tack on the $25 fee.......

christ, that's worse than the shortage prices.

Something's got to stop the spread of the blue disease. If it doesn't, life as we know it will cease to exist in another decade or so...

So much to cover:
New here and currently behind the Iron Curtain outside of America in California (Wife's pension will take 2-3 more years until she'll be ready). Christians, Fishers, Hunter (just me), Hikers, we love the outdoors.

1. The majority (by land mass) in CA is Red and conservative but a scant percentage of the electorate while the big Blue Metros with double population dominate the voting in the state (San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego). We are helpless & our votes do not count. I understand why you blame all Californians, but you need to know that while Biden got 11 million votes, DJ Trump got 6 million votes in 2020 in California. We are just surrounded and outnumbered–we've gone from US Flag flown upside down a few years a go to Broken Arrow at this point.

2. We are Red in the rural areas. Grew up in PA (before the military) when Deer outnumbered people in the state. Conservative to the core. US Army Vet, GOA (working on life member), CRPA Life Member, NRA Benefactor Life member.

3. Those of us patriots still here managed to vote in John Duarte (R) 13th District to the US House so we get little victories.

4. I have a COE (Commi-fornia requirement for some things) and an FFL03 so I get around a few things (30-day wait, internet ammo purchases, no ammo BG check) but not the main infringements.

5. We (the rural ones of us) are jealous of Red states. We will not eff-up your state; we want to bring our Red MAGA votes to where they'll count. We want to move back to America, The Bill of Rights, and vote Red & MAGA for We The People. We hate California politics, politicians but love the natural beauty.

6. www.calguns.net is a great site for catching up firearms and everything around them in California and the US. Been a member for decades. They are having hosting issues right now though, so performance sucks.

7. I have not bought a firearm in 4 years, but last time I bought (pistol by private party off Gun Broker) the fee was $45 at a local FLL so 500% would be $270!!!!

If you live in Commifornia, get a COE (Certificate of Eligibility - not hard but annual fee) and an FFL03 (expensive first time, but easy renewal every 5 years) and you can get ammo shipped to your door. Caveat: not all ammo retailers will ship to COE-FFL03s though. Lucky Gunner won't. Eff'em then. I joined the Target Sports USA membership and get free shipping.
Calguns has forum link to verified retailers who will ship to COE/FLL03 holders (you just upload PDFs and you're good to go)

500% or $5. It's a tell when anything gets expressed as a percentage without backup numbers.

I don't know of a gun seller that charges for background checks. Pretty greedy.

The DROS fee and BG Check fee are combined California... Most dealers round it up to $40-45. But total will vary above the $37.19 but not below because the dealer has to pay that to the state.

Here is the data in black and white from the California DOJ web site FAQ on firearms:
  1. How much is the state fee when purchasing a firearm?
    • The total state fee is $37.19. The DROS fee is $31.19 which covers the costs of the background checks and transfer registry. There is also a $1.00 Firearms Safety Act Fee, and a $5.00 Safety and Enforcement Fee. In the event of a private party transfer (PPT), the firearms dealer may charge an additional fee of up to $10.00 per firearm.
If the transaction is not a PPT the dealer may impose other charges as long as this amount is not misrepresented as a state fee. When settling on the purchase price of a firearm, you should ask the dealer to disclose all applicable fees.

      (Pen. Code, §§ 23690, 28055, 28230, 28300, 28233.)

I emboldened certain key parts for you edification on how this state works.

I'll call around my LGSs and ask about the "rumored" increase.
Also, we pay a sales tax (8.25% in my county) and a State Firearms Transaction Excise Tax (11%) on top of that.

Those of you you who live outside the Iron Curtain of California have no idea how greedy the state is.

the fee was raised to $5.00...then the background check is 500% of that.......or $25.00

had you watched the video, and paid attention, you wouldn't have questioned this, as the "back up numbers" were clearly mentioned.

If you’re buying the gun from them usually not. If you’re using them to transfer a gun you bought from another vendor it’s anywhere from $25-$50. That’s in the free states. Kalifornia you can bet the state charges for BGCs.

question is, how many are going to comment "for" passage and how many are going to comment "against passage"..??

i fear "for" more that against....

but either way, i'd be a betting person it gets passed

Yes, The Peoples Marxist Republik of Kalifornia charges a combined fee for the background check and DROS (Dealer Record Of Sale) processing. This is for all sales (retail, PPT (private party transfer)) so any FFL will charge you at least that because the state expects them to pay that amount to the state along with sales tax. If they do not, I am sue the CalDOJ will shut them down as they would for sales tax non-compliance.

The total fee will vary above the $37.19 but not below because the dealer has to pay that $31.19 to the state just like they pay sales tax. Most dealers round it up to an even $40-45. Note in the below, dealers can charge an additional $10 on PPT sales and they can add additional charges to non-PPT sales. As more gun stores close, some may start to do this.

Also in addition to sales tax, there is a new 11% state excise tax on firearms as well (recently enacted).

Here in New Mexico it is included in the price of firearm. If purchased online and sent here to ffl it can be as low as $20 or high of $35.
