Chronograph: Why checking your speed proves invaluable

135 gr Nosler , CFE 10.2 gr max
I started at 10.0gr @about 1570fps then 10.1 @1600 , 10.2 @ 1630 fps
So I went to 10.3 @ 1727 fps , and that was enough of a spike for me.

I haven't tried any cfe in the 10, but blue dot had been a hot load. Works great in my g20 and g40, but not so well in my xdm (5.25). I do need to chrono. Silhouette is also a go to in my 10s.

I'm not sure where you got the info, but Hodgson's site has the load data you posted. The chamber on your pistol must be smaller than their test barrel. I'm glad your buildup was productive and safely tested! That was definitely a big spike!

I'm glad it all worked out for you, but it could have been bad. And yes, chronies are worth their weight.

1st - I would ask what was the OAL of the loaded cartridge that spiked so high when you went to the 10.3gr ?
2nd - Do you know the OAL of the round in question. A particularly short OAL might have been a contributor to the spike due to high pressures if the bullet was seated a little too deep. Or even the brand of case you were using ..... some brands are much thicker walled than others and will/can cause a higher than normal pressure.
3rd - If in fact you were loading from Hodgdon's data, why in the world would you venture into anything more than what they recommend as MAX loading? It's seldom, if ever I've found any MAX load to be the most accurate.

I'm not beating up on you, just that I've always been relatively afraid to exceed any manufacturers MAX data warnings, and at the same time didn't see the need to beat the hell out of my gun. I figure they have the equipment and facility to do a lot more testing than I do .........., Know what I mean? (y)(y)(y)

I went over max because -- I WANTED TO
I understand, because I do the same thing on anything I can (357sig @40k+). Others on here have their opinions about "rolling your own". Some guns will let you and I have "I feel the need for speed"! If it can be safely done, go for it!

I guess the question then is ..... how do you know it can be "safely done" until after the fact? I assume if it doesn't blow off a few fingers or a hand, or blow your gun apart, then it was "safely done", 'cause if it did blow off a few fingers or a hand, or blow your gun apart, you likely wouldn't be able to post, huh? Then we'd never know if it was "safely done".(y)(y)

Just askin' y'all.

It is a big velocity jump for sure and for .1gr seems like something could be off? Neither of us are there too verify. As long as the case, primer and/or action has no over pressure signs then it should be safe!

It should be! ;)(y) But then again the loading data says it might not be. Oh well! I'll bet there's a reason they said that. I just accept that those men who tested and wrote the data are probably smarter than me.

CFE is not for me in the 10mm anymore , I have read where others have said the same thing or close as being "hot" but not in the 10mm
I do use it in 9mm and some .40
Right now I'm comparing CFE to W572 in 9mm with W572 looking pretty good
Oh the .357sig , I will soon be working on a 141gr castTC bullet

Let me know how the 572 turns out. Big imr and ww fan. Longshot, power pistol, be86 and bluedot have been good results on the 10mm. I NEED TOO CHRONO ALL FOR SURE!
