Dr Chris Raynor on shotgun lethality

You train a lot more with a shotgun than I, and teach so you're an expert in my book (y)(y)

I use economical 7.5/8s for running drills.
I use field loads on the range sometimes simply based on price, but unless I'm shooting skeet or quail the majority of what I use is going to be something that hits a lot harder. Not because it's more authentic in training, which is a legitimate argument I suppose, but simply because it's a lot more gratifying to destroy things then it is to just pepper them up. And it makes steel targets dance better.

I have several cases of 00B on the shelf from when I was training security officers for their state firearms license, since 00B is what they were required to shoot for qualification. We fired more than 100 rounds in the training and I used bird shot for most of it to avoid beating the students to death with recoil. Shotgun training wreaked havoc on my target frames but was great for keeping the weeds on the berm cut.

I can get that locally for $8.99/10 rds. which is a good price compared to the typical 5 rd. bxs., but haven't tried it yet.

I may have to pick some up to try it out in the M4 and 590 VC.
I get it around here in the 25rd boxes for $20, iirc.

It’s decent; definitely has looser patterns than the Federal FC.

I’ve found that the Winchester Defend plated 00 to be pretty decent, and usually around $1/rd.

Which just underscores that you absolutely have to check patterning with your specific gun, as it can vary a lot (as you should with any defensive ammo). The Winchester 'Defender' patterned notably wider out of my 590 than the Fiocchi did. Fed DC is still the gold standard imo, but the Fiocchi patterns plenty tight enough out of my gun at 25 yds, and I can afford to practice putting a lot more of it down range it than FC.

I'm not terribly impressed with Fiocchi. The green mil spec stuff patterns better and so does every type of Federal 00B load I've tried. I lean hard towards Federal for shotgun and pistol ammo. I have an abundance of the 9 pellet FC, but not nearly enough of the 8 pellet. I don't understand why Federal developed two very good shotgun loads ( 8 pellet FC and #1 buck FC) and either quit producing it or produced such small amounts of it you can never find it.

The Hornady 8 pellet with their Versa Tite wad is supposed to rival the Federal, but I haven't tried it. You can't find it either.

Since I got my 590 Vang Comped earlier this year I need to see what works the best thru it, and/or see what load gives me the best cross-compatibility with the M4.

I can get Fed Power-Shok, the Winchester green mil-spec, & regular red commercial, Fiocchi & Remington OO at reasonable prices, and some Rio locally so I have a decent selection to test/stock up on. Hornady is tough to find.

The only Hornady I’ve found locally is the 1600fps Black….which is freakin’ nuclear; way more recoil than I want in a defensive load, and a massive muzzle flash.

I’ve never patterned it; tried 5 rounds out of the AKSA S4 and decided the rest can sit in the stash.

In my experience, even the 00 FC has been hard to find the last several years, and expensive when I can find it.

I don't really concern myself too much with various shotgun ammo options beyond making sure it feeds and patterns well out of my particular gun. When I find something that does that, I call it good and move on.

The FC Field loads are, in my experience, the exact same thing as FC Tactical…there might be a difference in powder, but I can’t see a difference in flash when shooting in daytime. It’s usually around $1.50-$2 per round, though…

A while back a local sporting goods store had the 9 pellet FC 00B for about $9 or $10 per 5 round box. I bought every box they had and asked them if they had more in back. They did not. I ended up with about 80 rounds if memory serves.
