Dusted off the Glock today

Old_Me

SAINT
yup, it's been since October, 28, 2021, when i had the G-17 out of it's clamshell case. i had to dust off a layer of dust, from that clamshell case. this is actually my "back up" home defense gun. (it is also my first "plastic gun" when i started, the CZ 75 B is my first all metal gun)

back then (october 28th, 2021) , not only did it go to the range, but it hit the 3,000 rd count, so i fully disassembled the slide, and cleaned out the firing pin channel, extractor area, etc. i also at that time, installed a competition trigger spring, a "gold" firing pin safety from the Glock Store, and it already had the double D trigger connector.

now too...this is the second gun i am about to tell you about using Weapon Shield and it seemingly "disappearing".

when i took it out of the case, i field stripped it, and gave it some good ole Hoppes into the slide rails, and trigger connector.

and i am ever so glad that i did.....dang Weapon Shield is disappearing on these longer term non-use guns.

i think that from now on, i'll forgo the Weapon Shield and stick with Hoppes.

very disappointing to see "oil" disappear after only just about 4.5 months.

and like ALL my guns, when i store them..?? they are upright in thier gun pouch or clamshell case like this G-17 was, so where the hell does the Weapon Shield go to.>???

i'm about as sick and tired of having to re-lube a gun that was previously oiled, with was touted to be a superior lubricant.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

on another note, a super fantastic day at the range. only 3 fliers on the green/white target.

but a blown hole thru the "dart board" one....

some of the best shooting i have ever done with this G-17

Seriously, that is weird about the WS oil evaporating like that, I can take a pistol out of the safe that's been in there for over a year and it still is wet, Lucas Oil Extreme Duty CLP and Oil has never let me down yet

well, that was the second gun now that has "dried out"...the first was the Ruger GP 100, the wheel would hardly spin.

and here's the thing, this Glock was up in my bedroom, in it's clamshell case, out of harms way for humidity. the Ruger and all my other guns are in the basement, where in the summer time, i run a dehumidifier.

they are stored in a metal cabinet, with large bags of desiccant as well.

i could "see" the guns drying out, if they were exposed to the open air, but put away, in gun pouches, well lubed, and a controlled area..???

the Weapon Shield, "may" be absorbed?? into the pores of the metals..??? but then, for the Glock, that would pretty much only be the slides rails..??

what about the slides (??) tabs in the frame itself..??? BONE dry...!!!!!

i'll stick with Hoppes. the very last thing i want is a collection of oils.

i don't know what i'll be doing with the weapon shield, maybe lightly lube the reloading press's rams..???

I don't care what oil you put on it, if it sits in a case for a year it's going to disappear. Some will soak into the metal, some will evaporate. After a year, no matter what you are using, you better hit the 5 obligatory spots on your Glock with a drop of oil.

Range time is fun time !
Nice job 👍

All I can say is that there is no better manufacturer that consistently works than Glock. Glock saved my life a few years back and I will always have a soft spot for Glock. I will say that Springfield firearms have given me no problems. As far as I am concerned their motto says it all "Perfection"

i do like my G-17, it was my first, and i hope to keep it to my dying day. i have also a G-30, which i will be using to "test" reloaded .45 ACP when i start to finally get going on that.

i also really like the G-44, plinking .22lr is fun as well.

i got rid of my G-21, and G-19 however. i am basically getting away from the 9 mm except for my carry and that G-17 as my home back up gun.

i will never speak badly of Glock, as we know there are many out there that'll put them down in a heart beat.

they are as dependable as can be, priced about average maybe a bit lower, than some 9mm's, and in general terms, more readily available than some others, at some LGS's..

All kidding aside.
Nothing made by man is perfect, as with all products there are those that are consistently better then others. Some work, some don’t. It’s all about what you feel comfortable with and if there are small issues how you can overcome them. Glocks are good guns but for me Springfield’s fit my ergonomics better and I’m comfortable holding and shooting them.

as you say, nothing is perfect. well this G-17 that i shot yesterday, and posted those targets? had a problem that i solved, and mind you, that i was a new shooter, new gun owner, and didn't really know squat about repairing them.

when i took this back then, new G-17 to the range, the trigger felt "heavy", so i thought it was just the way a new gun was. but after several trips to the range, it did not improve.

well in the picture below, you will see where the trigger bar rubbed up against a slightly "bent" frame..!!

i think what happened was that after the frame came out of the mold? maybe it rested on another frame? or it got moved around in some way that when it cooled? the frame was bent into the trigger bar.

now, i could have just sent it back to Glock, they may have given me a new one. but what i did was (and remember, i didn't know how to disassemble a gun other than field strip), i removed the trigger bar, then i slowly filed down the 3-4 "nubs" molded into the frame, that were tightly pressing on the trigger bar.

i re-assembled the gun, and viola, a much smoother easier trigger!

that started my need to learn more and more about gun tear downs and some "minor" gunsmithing.

it's a lousy picture, but it's a lousy old digital camera as well

but you WILL see the "bend" in the frame onto the trigger bar
