Full Knee Replacement Surgery

Had left knee replaced this past Wednesday...and to those who have gone before me on the post operative days are beyond painful at best. I'm the world's worst patient...bar none...just ask my wife. The pain killers they provide these days are so light duty...these hospitals are scared to death with the opioid pandemic in the world around us.
And so, it goes I keep hearing the words it will get worse before it gets better, but you must push through it.... yeah, thanks for the support.
Been there done that. I hesitate to tell you. The next 2 months will be hell in bed.
Ice ice ice
Elevate elevate elevate
But in the end you will get better.
Not fun
Then thee is physical therapy
More fun
Stay strong.

UPDATE - Trying to turn the corner.... just shy of 3 weeks out. The edema makes the lower thigh full and heavy...restricts the range of motion they want from PT. The surgeon will see me Tuesday...anxious to hear his comments.
The tourniquet they use really does a number on the thigh muscles.
My hip replacement 11 yrs ago was a breeze compared to this procedure.
I feel for you brother. I'm now 10 1/2 weeks past my total knee replacement surgery. But it sure sounds like you had it way worse than me. I think the worst pain I felt was a little after the first week out, and I had a nightmare while sleeping. My wife woke up from my movements, and she said I started kicking at the air. My leg that had the total knee replacement slipped off the bed and that white hot pain woke me the heck up! My wife said she had never heard a scream of pain like that before. I started popping all the pain pills I had before the real pain would kick in. But I didn't do any real damage and was able to go back to sleep within an hour. For myself, physical therapy has been really good. I still go and actually look forward to it. But the first couple of weeks were tough, I admit. I hope you get some relief soon.

Did your doctor order up compression socks or not. Mine did not.

Graduated to using a cane around the house. Steady as she goes...from here on out. Leg still has that heaviness about it. Not depending on the drugs as much through the day but nighttime is a different story. Icing when watching the tube. The green light to drive still a week or two out.... darn.

I'm at 2 and a half months now. My knee is a little stiff in the mornings when I get out of bed. Or have been sitting for a long time. Started taking long walks now. The only pain I have is mild aches from the weather. My doctor told me that I'll be recovering for about a year, and he said I'll be amazed at the progress from here on out. It will get better for you.

Sounds like all is going ok, keep up the good work, glad your mending well

Dang -- read the whole thread and guess I'm blessed the only bad thing was a busted left shoulder -- ball and socket. Wore the sling and PT but haven't done the bionic stuff. Got arthritis in it but handle it well enough. Mrs. Tinyman had both hips done about four months apart -- PT and Tylenol. She was my hero.

I have had 6 total knee replacements; 2 work acceptably, 2 were doctor error, and 2 were part of a recall. Five were on my right knee, one on the left. From my vast experience, it takes a while to recover, and if it is going to go bad, you will know it within a year.

Oh man, that gives me cold chills. How could you have been dealt such a hand. My brother-in-law had both knees done 10+ yrs. ago and now at the age of 76 he is having extreme complications form a most recent replacement that went south. In, fact the doctors don't have a clue as to why he is not healing as he should. Not good.
Yes, the PT therapists don't cut me any slack, in fact the evening after an afternoon session I'm really stoved up. I need to rely on the pain meds to get me through some of those nights. And not being able to fall into any kind of much needed sleep is simply out of the question.
I'll be glad when the stiffness subsides. And yes, I'm wanting this to be over already but must come grips it's a process and slow one at that.

All this talk has me worried. Even though so far this knee replacement recovery has gone well, I still have my other knee that needs the same thing done to it.

Do you mind sharing your age?

It seems like for every 10 people that have gone through this...they each have 10 different stages of recovery...some early...some late.
What's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander...lol

I went thru a couple of bad doctors and have had friends who have found some more. Make sure you check everywhere for reviews, and if they screw up, sue them. I didn’t and regret it. Going thru a knee a year wasn’t fun. I am about to turn 80, and walked 200 miles in Spain last April, so a good knee will definitely last you supposedly 10 years. Should have mentioned. Don’t just go to an orthopedic surgeon, go to someone who specializes in knees! Good luck.
