Massad Ayoob on 3am knock on the door

Who answers the door at 3 AM ?

You could be sitting comfortably on the couch. Facing the door. With a shotgun.

Last time someone knocked on my door in the small hours it went like this:

Shuffle downstairs with house gun and peak through the blinds at the trash can I set up as a mirror so I can see the corners of the stoop.

Young dude, obviously influenced takes a few steps back from the door without noticing me.

Kid lays out his hoodie on the stoop like a blanket then walks up to the door again and stares at it.

I observe.

Kid bangs on the door again then suddenly turns to leave but can't figure out the gate mechanism and has to climb over it.

I go back to sleep.

well, here pizza deliveries end at 4AM.....true

a drug dealer can be knocking on the wrong door.....here too, that would be true

a drunk or stoner can be thinking he/she is at home, and no one is letting him/her in.

cops don't knock on doors here, unless one thinks the ramrod is a knock..????

While now currently living in an RV and well prepared “enough said” I have only one door and completely understand that RV doors are not very secure.
I also have three windows that are designed to be popped out easily for a quick exit in an emergency, both windows in the bedroom and a large window in the living area…..
While in bed I have a direct view of the door and anyone breaking in through the door is burnt toast if they show any aggression.

My old house had motion sensors and cameras. In our new house out in the country we do not yet have those. But we have big windows near the door, and my people hating German Shepherds will already be trying to break down the door before anyone can get close enough to knock or ring the doorbell. And I will carefully come investigate the commotion armed with my bedside firearm.

DoorDash or UberEats at the wrong address. Yes, a lot of people order food at that time of night and especially on the weekends. A few restaurants and convenience stores stay open to to 3am or 24 hours a day. I'd say as the home owner, be vigilant and prepared for the worse case scenario, but don't start shooting through the door, threatening to shoot someone with a gun, etc. because it could be an innocent mistake or someone needing help.

I recall seeing stories over the years of someone getting into a car accident or being robbed and shot. They were knocking on doors in the middle of the night trying to get help.

There has also been literally been A LOT of documented cases of law enforcement doing no knock warrants at the wrong house in the middle of the night as well, so that's another thing to take into consideration. I've also seen one video of a group of thugs kicking in the door while yelling "Police!"

I've seen videos like the one below several times. It's a common tactic many home Invaders are starting to use. At that point, your dead if you shoot and it's really police, and you risk a family member being raped, assault, or killed if you don't. There have been home owners who shot and killed police, they themselves were shot and survived, but they were charged with murder even they were woken up from a deep sleep, didn't know it was the police, and the officers had the wrong home.

First here's the actual video.

Second, it's already been said but we're a quarter of the way through the 21st century how do you not have a ring doorbell or it's equivalent on your door?

If someone were to knock on my door at 3:00 in the morning I would definitely acknowledge that they were there. I would make sure that they knew that somebody was awake in the house and aware of their presence but it wouldn't open the door unless I knew exactly who it was.

We live out in the sticks, so I have things set up purposefully to ensure we're aware when folks are around.
If they come up my driveway, they'll hit a sensor that alerts me before they even get close to the house.
We also have cameras all over the outside of the house that alert us when somebody is around.
My house is surrounded by woods and you can't see it from the road, there's no turnaround until you get up the house so unless you plan on backing out, you are committed once you start driving up.

that is very true about door dash or uber eats.

i have had food dropped off at my front porch at least 3 times..

you'd think the dumbassed delivery drivers would know that # 76 and # 75 are different numbers, and across the street from one another.

but they got paid, they got thier tip, do they really care..????
