New Owner, New Poster

Hi all,

I hadn’t handled a firearm in over 50 years when a friend talked me into going to a local indoor range to shoot with him. It was a “memorable” occasion to say the least. He asked if I had ear protection and I said yes, so I brought the ear protectors I use when I run my woodworking power tools. Hahaha -huge mistake. I fired about 20 rounds from one of his 9mm pistols - yikes that was loud. But when he brought out his AR-15 5.66 and fired one round, I was outta there!

Well, I didn’t give up. I bought a S&W M&P 22 mag semi automatic pistol and a Saint Victor 9mm carbine. Today we went back to the range for my first outing with the new guns. Oh yeah, and a Peltor 500 headset! OMG - what a difference between firing those two guns. Surprisingly the 22 mag was louder and had more recoil than the AR. But even more surprising to me was that I had a ton of failures getting the 22 mag cartridges to chamber using several brands of ammo. It seemed happy with Hornady but I only had ten of them to try. Anyway, I went through 150+ rounds of three different brands and not one single failure on the Saint Victor.

So, I’m really impressed with that Saint Victor 9mm! Need a bit more testing on the S&W, though… ☹️

I have the s&w 5.7 that uses the same TEMPO system and have had an issue of an empty case (after being fired) stuck in the chamber that was locked shut. I did manage to remove it, but haven't given it a thorough cleaning or shot it since (hadn't had time). It's accurate with american eagle fmj and fn v-max. I've thought about getting the 22mag, but the 5.7 is reloadable and faster. Hope the 22mag starts running tip top soon!

Hi @K7TXA / JIM,

Welcome to the forum. That 9mm Saint has been tempting me too. It happens quite often that .22LR can be glitchy. It's the nature of the beast. I didn't think you'd have as much trouble with .22WMR. It could be that the new pistol just needs a little break in time. A .22 mag is an interesting pistol.

Your story sounds similar to mine. I got back into the shooting sports a few years ago and haven't slowed down. It sounds like you're enjoying yourself.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Welcome to the party from…….
“currently Texas” jump right in with both feet just watch out for the chicken poop @10mmLife constantly forgets to close the coop door.
I’ve been out of touch lately but I’m hearing @HansGruber is healing up from his latest fall from his yearly tower takeover attempt and I honestly don’t know what to say about @Annihilator lately.
@BET7 I understand is still trying to buy every gun he can get his hands on so don’t hesitate if you see something you like.
Me, well I’m retired and living the dream of travel and exploration.
That being said a great group of guys and gals with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Edit….
And then there’s @Bassbob…….
Just kidding…..
Enjoy!!!!

Welcome to the forum. Stick around. This place is infomrstive, fun and a bit nutty at times.
Did you witness the “22 mag fireball”? Nice pick ups on the s&w and the victor.
Actually, I didn’t notice the fireball and I was expecting to see one after watching a couple YouTube videos. I also have a Holosun green dot on it and maybe I was mesmerized by that!!

I feel your pain (literally) on the noise level. I recall my first trip to a crowded range years back and I was next to a guy shooting a Ruger Redhawk. I was using cheepo foam plugs. My ears hurt bad for several days after. I had a set of molded plugs made…best somebody else’s money (my employer) I ever spent. Always have them in at a crowded range nowadays. I use Walkers Razor for casual shooting at my gun club.
Welcome and Happy Shooting.
