Not an AR15 kinda guy but....

So what caliber are you looking for? Does a PCC in .45ACP or 9mm work better for you? Or are you looking for higher power and longer distances?

My "truck gun" is my CMMG Banshee in .45ACP loaded with 230 gr JHP rounds. It works phenomenally at close range; it can reach out to a reasonable distance and it's extremely accurate in both scenarios. I'm not going to worry about 300-yard accuracy. I suspect that any engagement that happens when I am in my vehicle will be up close and personal.

Another option is a 5.56 NATO or 300BLK short-barreled rifle but be aware that even with the shortened barrel that round will punch through stuff that you may not want it to pass through. I have a Ruger SR556 AR that I could carry too but I choose the CMMG over the Ruger based on the rationale offered above.

Another option is a tactically optioned short-barreled shotgun with OO or slugs loaded. Looking at the gaping maw of a 12 ga. usually deters people from taking another step. If not, you won't have to worry about the firearm, or the rounds loaded not stopping the aggressor.

Finally, like many members here, I have a carry pistol that goes with me everywhere and is within easy reach when needed. Again, this is an up close and personal scenario weapon, but it never hurts to practice taking some long-distance shots just to know what you can, and can't do, at distance.

Pistols are covered as is shotguns. I really want a 5.56 AR platform as I've only ever owned 1.

Whats the word on ATI? Worth having?

I'd pass on them.

Are you familiar with building out a stripped lower ( It's pretty simple) ? Based on your budget you're not after anything "Gucchi" so your best bet is to get a PSA complete upper which is almost always in the $200-$250 range, get a stripped lower ( Usually under $50) and a LPK ( lower parts kit). The PSA EPT LPK comes with the EPT trigger which is probably the nicest run of the mill, mil spec trigger I've run across. Usually a LPK comes with everything you need, but if you want different triggers and grips, etc. you can look around for one that has the stuff you want ( PSA has many different ones) or you can buy one that doesn't come with a grip or FCG ( trigger) and buy that stuff separately.

Either way for well less than 1k you can put together a damn nice pistol. You can probably even get you a SA folder for it and stay under budget. Palmetto State and Bear Creek both sell decent, budget friendly complete uppers.
