So what caliber are you looking for? Does a PCC in .45ACP or 9mm work better for you? Or are you looking for higher power and longer distances?
My "truck gun" is my CMMG Banshee in .45ACP loaded with 230 gr JHP rounds. It works phenomenally at close range; it can reach out to a reasonable distance and it's extremely accurate in both scenarios. I'm not going to worry about 300-yard accuracy. I suspect that any engagement that happens when I am in my vehicle will be up close and personal.
Another option is a 5.56 NATO or 300BLK short-barreled rifle but be aware that even with the shortened barrel that round will punch through stuff that you may not want it to pass through. I have a Ruger SR556 AR that I could carry too but I choose the CMMG over the Ruger based on the rationale offered above.
Another option is a tactically optioned short-barreled shotgun with OO or slugs loaded. Looking at the gaping maw of a 12 ga. usually deters people from taking another step. If not, you won't have to worry about the firearm, or the rounds loaded not stopping the aggressor.
Finally, like many members here, I have a carry pistol that goes with me everywhere and is within easy reach when needed. Again, this is an up close and personal scenario weapon, but it never hurts to practice taking some long-distance shots just to know what you can, and can't do, at distance.
