One more coyote attack reported

So this time the LEOs have put out a picture of the wild dog. Apparently it bit the guy in his garage. Rabies?

"The Arizona Game and Fish Department said the animal might be rabid. The animal has not been captured and anyone who sees it should "seek shelter" from it, the agency said." Seek shelter? From a 40lb dog? Well then, break out the body armor. Beautiful creatures and part of our NA wildlife.

I’ve seen some that were NOT afraid of people. We had a very large, nearly black ‘yote around here a few years ago. Wife was dog sitting a friends tiny dog. She walked him in the back yard and this big ‘yote came out of the woods into our backyard advancing toward her-think it saw the yipper as a snack. She grabbed the little dog and retreated back toward the house. He got a couple of our neighbors cats. Saw him a couple other times where he’d walk parallel to us in the edge of the woods about 100 yards out as we walked down our 1/4 mile long drive. He did it once too often and a 240 grain cast .44 out of a 94 Marlin put paid to his depredations😏

the ones here are getting less afraid of people and encounters are becoming more frequent. same with fox.

My bud Spud. She used to walk the fenceline with me at work. I never fed her. I did make sure she had water. She wouldn't go near anyone else at work.

When I was young, rabbit and quail hunting were big here in West Tennessee. But about 30 years ago, the coyotes manged to cross the Mississippi river. Now the damned things are everywhere and there ain't a rabbit or quail to be found. I hate those troublesome critters. 🤬

In the spring there are 2 fox in different areas that i encounter when walking my dogs. They follow us but keep their distance then at the same spot each time they’ll stop and back off. They must have dens nearby that they are protecting. It only happens in spring. It was unnerving at first but then it was pretty cool. The dogs didn’t seem to mind either.

I had to get the series of rabies shots years ago due to a dog attack on duty. Those shots really hurt like hell. Long story short, Palm Sunday two large dogs (later found out Dogo Argentino's) out in a couple's yard pouring rain filthy dirty. Lady comes out w them on leashes. Tells me they are friendly and she found them in her yard. She then tells me you're all spiffy shined up boots, duty gear and starched uniform open the back door to your patrol car I'll put them in. First one no problem second one walks by me and then like lightning sinks his teeth into my upper left leg and started shaking his head ripped my pants to shreds and blood everywhere. Concerned about dispatching him so I punched him several times and then jabbed him in the eye. He let go and my partner arrived along w an ambulance started passing out on the way to trauma. Owners weren't located for days hence the shots. Animal control said I should have shot the dog and it would have been justified. Anyways one of the hottest nurses who administered the shots but I knew it was gonna smart when she handed me a bite stick.

When I was a pup I roamed the toolies a lot, unarmed unless actually hunting. One day a buddy and I were in the national forest, literally miles from anywhere scouting a place to bow hunt for deer. We found ourselves in company of a pack of large, obviously feral dogs-they circled us,growling and snapping. I wasn’t particularly afraid they’d kill us (though I probably Should have been), but I was Very scared we’d get it and do the rabies shot thing. Carl and I wound up in a tree with these guys below and carrying on. Finally they gave up and wandered off. After a bit we got down and beat feet a mile and a half back to my Scout. We went back the following day with an M1 carbine and a 44/40Model 92 Winchester and solved that problem, however ever since that day more than 50 years ago I never go out in thee woods without at least a handgunproblem. (For the past 3 1/2 decades I’ve carried, legally, pretty much everyday, however when I’m going “out” in the wilds I’m usually armed with a heavier caliber than my usual 9 mm CC (usually a moderate loaded.44 Mag). I have dispatched at times raccoons, a Fox, a couple skunks and other beasties that aren’t acting”right” (and plant them using a E tool). ANY wild critter “can” be a Problem. A wise man in the wilds is prepared.
