On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan is shot in the chest outside a Washington, D.C. hotel by a drifter named John Hinckley Jr.

The president was shot in the left lung, and the .22 caliber bullet just missed his heart.
In an impressive feat for a 70-year-old man with a collapsed lung, he walked into George Washington University Hospital under his own power.
As he was treated and prepared for surgery, he was in good spirits and quipped to his wife, Nancy,” Honey, I forgot to duck,” and to his surgeons, “Please tell me you’re Republicans.” Reagan’s surgery lasted two hours, and he was listed in stable and good condition afterward.

This image of the Secret Service agent had everyone asking for an Uzi. (I worked at a sporting goods store at the time)
Could have sold a thousand of them :)

Once I was old enough to vote, he was the first president I have voted for. His second term, I wasn't old enough to vote during his first term.
Yep. I did the absentee ballot. He was also my first. I remember the looks I got when I asked our Voting Assistant Officer what I needed to do to vote. I guess I was the first one to ask.
I got my ballot, filled it out and turned it into him.

I was in 7th grade in band class when the news broke.

And just so you know in 1981 we were closer to the Pearl Harbor attack than we are to this anniversary….your welcome!!!!
I think I was in 7th grade too. Or possibly 6th. I'm not sure what class, but I do know the entire school was sent to the gym where TVs were rolled out with the news and the pastor ( it was a Lutheran school) led the entire school in prayer.

I did absentee ballot also, while in basic training at Ft. Benning. I needed to have a witness signature and asked my Drill Sgt. to sign it. I purposely left the ballet open, so he could see who I voted for. I was treated a whole lot better after that. lol

I was working the street at my PD in Florida when I heard of this. I had been an agent in the USAF until 1978 working protection details and had met USSS agents working that detail. Hinkley was surprisingly effective. He shot 4 people, Reagan in the chest, Brady in the head, McCarthy in the chest, and a Metro police officer Tom Delehanty in the neck. Brady got the worst of it.
All of the victims survived. He was shooting .22 devastator rounds from a cheap pistol. Reagan came within a fraction of being killed. Hinkley was obsessed with Jodie Foster and wanted to impress her. Irony of ironies, she later came out as a lesbian.

It lit a fire under the modern gun control movement, eventually spawning the Brady bunch.

Two years later I purchased a registered slotted full auto bolt that came from Michael Brown's Group Industries. A year later I shipped the bolt to a company called Billistic Inc in Wallingford Ct and Bill completed the conversion of an IMI B model.
