Range Report: Quick 100 Rounds w/Ronin, 4/1/25

BassCliff

Professional
Hey there!

It was kind of a busy day for me. Mrs. BassCliff is out of town so I hurried with all the chores and errands on today's to-do list so I could squeeze in an extra range trip this week. In between errands I was able to clean my new Ronin 9mm and install a little heavier recoil spring, replacing the 9lb spring with a 12lb spring.

The closer facility is closed on Mondays so I had to get over to the newer facility to procure my favorite, lane #6.

I was only shooting my latest acquisition, 1911 Ronin 9mm, and only 100 rounds. (I had to get back to let my dog out.)

I really like those 10 round Mec-Gar magazines. They work great and the base plate is stylish, doesn't stick out much or look ugly. I shot all at 10 yards today. I was mostly trying to verify my rear sight adjustments from last week. Dang, but that B-8 looks like a little black dot out there.

AP1GczOuT_EklgEs17ES7UaqQbijoIPeXdtMe8QzI9m2mep0RuLj1cTLQcSqEV86zLec7SPV0Lb4qfww81YmH320kFgs_RFqxL3UeTJmhrIMxb60blQ4j3-gXusEPtDHPnF3PH0hfU0N8z6uBMow3kbCNqs-4w=w1648-h927-s-no

I'm going to shoot five B-8 targets and then switch it up just for fun. The first target came back like this. I guess that's about average for me.

AP1GczMP-luSr9Z-nq3olCxcPcIhdCgpAf5zKsPG60YLp0do1Grl_N_kcDGQRvxMmsc86ZtjSW5FRtuDCP929Sgz8A2cPqiYlwCT7c1s5Mql7An0MrZiXG35lHJe6LlthjafzVTtAReksgmfUYn8EJ_4VcNsjg=w1648-h927-s-no

I'll run through these targets pretty quickly because there's nothing here that really lights your powder, if you know what I mean. Target #2 is slightly better than the first.

AP1GczOOPM-xWkrjEVEWhdb-MIVZ6TaPtoaYvTyzTl35ay-oPED-WVs5ZemhrWY0_knY-t1qNnUox4JMMCN-PS_7xeLtRnbUsFSQTG9LpRU6WW69jM7Bph2GELkojhXXN8NwE83x3LyLbsHo5y9lW5F2GGp26w=w1648-h927-s-no

Target #3 is not too shabby except for the one really bad flyer. There's one in every crowd.

AP1GczNsVVm-T0XDnXi3xnGwiKxmG4StBQbuy5A6s8CLHSB-ZGgGv3x2VY_KmeQ34ruJKsMxyga1hLw4l3l6HGrhGtUWrzz4-qknNCAytp5ux0LdjZ1WQT6ZBzSxhIpmV8-SSpih6PykbpHJfIjmpqJjC341oQ=w1648-h927-s-no

I don't know what happened with target #4. Maybe I was shooting faster and let things spread. I should take better notes.

AP1GczOM6m4UrDZUCCUAVU6ZQj94evTG1VptgZ0gMmTEawMlXALwjfwoVXu0OS6jxmIKLF2ZPTgJ4TEDXI-u4y1GoWyBhj8vxTFg1n8renUriUHAeDf6bix30XJ0ztSNtJG7hNuRp12fB7MGNDBtsK7XFOx7iA=w1648-h927-s-no

I settled down a little for target #5 but still let one get high. One of these days I'm really going to work on my consistency. I need to get used to the hold on this gun. I've just about got it figured out.

AP1GczPOvKx9acaE8Dlc9s5GlZnl2jI2bye3pn0wt6148ECtvqcvVBdWGp-ba3alrV0zQRflXVxc-0xAmJxsRNuesCM4HBJGR71soBuJnsv-pwH3WJ85bxpQWAGvgwfrp8ElIh5NpD3xJZBLtzx_dcwvo7wKgw=w1648-h927-s-no

Here we go, just for grins and giggles, I'll peel off the other targets so we can get a look at the big ragged hole I made.

AP1GczO8FQ_iiys1os2E1KCassqYTi13Fobn78BQOUJMEOok_7RGBaXDGczCveu2gEYtzPaaJ4Tf2oxK3JaeZ7UJ72PoZtPtqyfqr6Wzgby1z1FAuS6iJHBlomdjravsWLvAqWiqeldwvk2gKYx4nUnS7fhtcA=w1648-h927-s-no

I really like shooting 10-shot strings. I can better tell the relationship between POA and POI. But one day soon I'll put 50 on the same bullseye and see how much I can chew out. Anyway, for my next trick I will shoot the whole box at a single target but I'll use five bullseyes. Someone mentioned the "You Suck" shooting correction chart recently so I thought I'd give it a try today.

I will put 10 hits on the "You Suck" target as well as on each of the 4" reactive circles. Well, I'll try my mediocre-est.

AP1GczP6nLsbzAdgdo4cFvfXZqlCg255Fr0jhMmFyJMn5_v18B3RykqDEiMk_A5mHynX067yYIcV3UMGqHinxMTDWilywLWk26bX1pWPqPgxvSXhlIPqywRfusXtWFA_X-GgglrLwygesiXSMJhf5pobX-8hYA=w1648-h927-s-no

Well, it's official. According to this shooting correction chart, I suck. At least I don't have to leave the range. I shot the upper left bullseye the best. The other three spread out a bit. I think at this time I was in a little hurry because I heard the RSO come up to the guy in the lane next to me and say, "Always keep the muzzle pointed downrange!" I'm pretty sure the dividers are ballistic material but knowing that next door is someone who may not be well-versed in proper procedures can be disconcerting. I got done with my 100 rounds so I could split.

I'm hoping to take my new Ronin out again this week, maybe tomorrow. I'll let you know. This thing shoots so well that there's no excuse for me, other than I suck. :ROFLMAO: I did have one double feed today, the only malfunction. Now that the gun has 200 rounds through it, perhaps it is close to break-in and will settle down soon. I'll bring my favorite target too, see if that helps. Thanks for putting up with me.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

tell me more about the heavier spring and how it helped or hindered
i have not experienced any stove pipes or failed to load with the factory spring,
i sort of like the feel it has......but going to 12 might be a bit more like the loaded 1911

and i love them YOU SUCK targets
i always leave one or two attached to a stand when we leave the range..
or give them out as awards to ribbbbbb the buddies :ROFLMAO:

Nice. I have a full size Ronin 9mm also. They are very nice 1911's.

I also think the stock 9 lb recoil spring is too light. I think they install it because many user will mainly use cheap relatively weak 115 grain range ammunition.

I like good and somewhat higher pressure 124 grain ( or 123 Gr Lapua) as well as 124 Gr +P Gold Dots and I tried a 12# spring and got a couple of failures to lock open with some weaker range ammo I was using up so I switched to an 11 lb Wolff and it runs like a champ. I suspect that after I get more rounds through it a 12 will be good also but the 11 pounder seems pretty good..

that's "funny" how many of us have a favorite lane at one place, or another.

at my club, i am all alone, so i like lane # 2

at the public range, i like #12, so that other will not walk all over my brass.

as for sucking............???

i don't think so

Hi guys,

You're all too kind. ;)

CORRECTION: you do not suck. We'll hear no more of that nonsense. . .

OK, let's just say there is negative air pressure in my lane.

There's no sucking there, Cliff. Keep on keeping on, that's a nice gun you have there 😊

Thanks. One day I hope to turn off the vacuum cleaner and get a 2" group at 10 yards. ;)

you punished that target and good. Nice shooting.

We'll call it "combat" accuracy. Thanks. Some days are good, some are better. A day at the range is always nice. :)

I had read on this and other forums that a heavier spring is often used to make this gun run "smoother". There was sometimes problems with the slide not going back into full battery, feed and ejection issues, etc. The heavier spring also saves wear and tear on the slide and frame because it's not slamming back and forth as hard. I did notice that while I was shooting during this session. (I guess that's the "smoother" part.) It is recommended changing 1911 recoil springs every 4000-5000 rounds. My thanks to @Annihilator for these recommendations. (I didn't have to RTFM.)

I think I'll start using the 'you suck' targets more, in the hopes of "aim small, miss small" into that 2" center dot.

Cool. I usually shoot 124 grain. I have some NATO 9mm in use occasionally but rarely any true +P. I imagine in another 100-200 rounds this Ronin will be "like butter". (y)

Hi,

Most excellent, once again!! And watching what seems like your non stop 1911 range trips, I’m thinking my Emissary must be feeling mighty neglected!

Thanks. I'm hoping to get out again today or tomorrow since Mrs. BassCliff is out of town. I'll bring the Ronin since it's already dirty, and maybe the Garrison. We'll have a 1911 face off. ;)

Cliff, here’s a tip from Silverado Shooting Academy on YouTube : “Never exceed the speed of control”.

I discovered I’d fallen into the habit of firing too fast. When I made a conscious effort to stop, my shots improved markedly…but maybe it’s just me.

Close; Heavier spring does not open as hard but it closes harder which is why it helps going back into battery. Ideal is to strike a balance where it opens fully and locks on last shot while still going fully into battery. 11 or 12 lbs seems to be a sweet spot for 9mm in a full size 1911. Other calibers would require heavier springs.

Thanks for that detail. The physics makes sense the way you explain it.

Is it possible for a shooter to tell if a recoil spring is worn out? I guess failing to go back into battery is a tell. I've gotten lazy as of late and I'm not keeping accurate up-to-date records for round counts. I suppose replacing recoil springs every 3-4 years is cheap insurance.

Hi,

Nice report Cliff. You’re getting quite a nice little collection going. Coming from California I’m guessing it’s like when a guy discovers women for the first time. Now he must have all of them. 😜🤪🤣🤣

I'm hoping to collect "just one of each". Guns that is, not women. :ROFLMAO:

I'm afraid that might mean just one Glock and one Hi Point. 😱

Thanks for the tip! Most of my training has been self defense where "speed an accuracy" are balanced. But some of my practice sessions are dedicated more toward marksmanship, where I make a conscious effort to slow down and really stress fundamentals. I'm gonna finish my coffee and get out there again to see if I can do any better this afternoon.

I gave up on training here lately, l just go out to have some fun, and to try to keep my shot placement consistent, but I am a long way from this with my recent outings, not shooting for a tad over 2 years has it’s drawbacks, but I ain’t giving up, going to try to get out next week, to many doctors stuff this week, you doing a good job there Cliff, keep it up
