Red dots for ARs

Bassbob

Emissary
I'll spare you all the lengthy diatribe I had worked up and just say that with the last one I put together I want to set it up with a high quality, (non Chinese ideally) optic suitable to CQB. I have and still am giving serious consideration to that Holosun thermal unit though. Also the Vortex Huey and some of the Eotechs. Price isn't really a consideration. I mean it is but that Holosun is about $1600 and it's not out of the question. Really I'd like to be around a grand or even less. $700-ish would be great. Must be a closed emitter and I prefer green. And not just a dot. The Eotech/Holosun reticle suits me well as I think some of the ballistic reticles out there would as well. I know the Vortex AMG UH-1 is or used to be made in the US with high quality Japanese etched glass. The Eotechs are US made, but for a few years now I've been hearing bad things about them.

An LPVO isn't out of the question, but I am guessing that one that is actually high performance at both CQB ( both eyes open) distance and long distance probably isn't cheap. Someone floated the idea of the VCOG, but I don't know anyone who actually has one.

I'm no doubt going to overthink this one and it will likely take me awhile to come to a decision, but one way or another this gun will have a really nice optic on it.

Opinions ?

Looking at reviews for the Holosuns ( both NV and thermal) has led me to cease consideration of them. I can already hear @KillerFord1977 telling me they are pieces of crap. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Ever considered an ACOG? They work pretty slick, and were designed from the get-go for both eyes open shooting.

And if you can put up with just a dot…Aimpoint. I’ve got several, they’re my go-to.
I would definitely consider an ACOG, but I'm gonna want to see one first. I don't want to drop a grand only to find out it doesn't do close range well. I also have been looking at Aimpoints. Primarily the one that's the next step up from the Duty model. I'd like it to be green.

BTW Huey is both eyes open as well.

I'm not sold on the magnifier set up. I have one on a cheaper rifle ( in front of a 510C ) and I don't dislike it, but I have to mount the 510 a little further out and partially off the receiver which I don't like to do. That is if I want BUIS. Which correct me if I'm wrong, but if this is an etched reticle it will still work if the battery dies correct ?

Which Aimpoint(s) do you have on ARs and which do you recommend and why ? I like the ACRO, but I think it's a little small. The H2 is nice. The Patrol unit and the Duty RDS both seem legit.

I am an ACOG fan. I have a green chevron 4x ACOG on my SIG 516 and have run it hard from 100 down to 15 yards. I have an EOTEC mounted at 45 degrees that I rotate to for up close and personal work. It's a configuration used by special warfare teams and works great for me. I have gone through three high round LE instructor courses with this setup and it has served me well.

I currently have 3 of these. 2 on ar rifles and one on a scorpion.
I tried adding an aimpoint magnifier to one a few years ago. I have an astigmatism, well you can guess how that worked out. Just keep in mind if you have an astigmatism when looking at magnifying a dot.

I'm a big fan of Eotech and Aimpoint. Haven't used the Vortex Holo, mostly because at that price point I can get an Eotech. Really wish they would get with the times and add a shake awake feature.

Heard too much negative about Trijicon MRO so stayed away from those. Those thermal Holosun optics are definitely intriguing.
