Rusting parts on my HellCat

The topic had me check on this, so for some reference and comment, here’s my XD45 (circa 2008) showing rust…or discoloration? Obviously this are not plated parts and actually received a film coat of oil over the course of years of cleaning. These are the only 2 parts that that show rust. Magnified, I don’t see any pitting or flaking corrosion and more importantly no malfunctioning.

almost looks like discoloration. but i cannot see up close, like you can.

That’s what I think, but there is a bit of wear showing the shiny metal under.
I won’t be putting any abrasives to clean this but the coating or discoloration is odd and not like a true rust oxidation like with ordinary steels.
I wonder if this is what wsw229 was originally asking about.
thanks for your input !

Thats not rust, thats the color of those two parts.

I also IWB my Hellcat. It doesn't get much love. I haven't even cleaned it since last range day. I do wipe the optics lens off one a week. I live in central TX so it had been humid as hell till about a month and half ago, now dry as a bone. It has been rained on twice while walking my dog, all I did was wipe the optics lenses off. I'm sweating on it daily in +100°. Pistol hasn't ever had a malfunction, nor any rust.

Some alloys turn a plum color when blued. Here's another explanation: "The plum color is caused by the metal composition and temper plus the strength of the bluing bath used. The weaker the chemicals, the thinner the finish and more likely the color will turn purple. The bluing bath can also be at the wrong temperature."

Wasn’t the late 90’s—the XD didn’t exist then (the HS2000, the XD before Springfield got importation rights, didn’t come in until 2000, and SA got them in 2002, or so).

But still, the early XD’s were infamous for rusting. Sounds like Croatia needs to step up QC.
Might have got the year wrong, I just remember I just started out at the sheriffs dept, my bad

Anybody else have issue with internal parts rusting on their HC?
I carry IWB and live in SC. Plenty of sweating going on. My trigger pin rusted badly as has my mag catch. These are generally not user serviceable parts.
I need to know as well, since am about to purchase one, store in trunk, other outside areas = why I'm here. I CAN share that the Ruger LCR that will be replaced by Hellcat DID have one rust area of concern = the internal cylinder spring, always hidden upon routine cleaning, be it lubed or not! UGH can't cost a fortune to produce this tiny spring with stainless steel .... no complaints rest of gun & superior in every other way to competitors, esp. S&W, even "Performance Center" BS

None on mine and it still gets carried every day and very rarely gets a bit of oil.

My Hellcat, and my other 2 EDC's see the range at a minimum of 2 or 3 weeks followed by a thorough clean and lube thereafter. When carried but not shot, it's inspected weekly and a touch up clean and lube is done, especially if it's been out in the rain or in humid conditions. In my safe, the humidity control is good but everything not shot recently is inspected monthly.

Your daily carry should be cleaned regularly. I clean mine monthly and use Hoppe's. I don't use any oil or lubes because they tend to attract lint and dirt. If I shot it a lot, I would use some oil. But my daily carry doesn't get much range use and will hopefully never be used for its intended purpose. It is a S&W model 457. I have carried it OWB in a high ride holster for many years and never encountered a rust issue. I always wear a tucked in t shirt with an untucked shirt to conceal it. The t shirt keeps it from making direct contact with my skin for both comfort and to try to minimize sweat.

The early model XDs did have rusting issues early on. If I recall, they changed up the coating to fix the problem.
I haven't had any rusting issues with my Hellcat, and I carry it all the time. I live in Georgia where we also have high humidity.

Ballistol. Here in the bluegrass it’s humid (and hot) in the summer. I’ve carried for decades, clean my carry gun everyday, all day. Never had any issue with rust (except a bit on grip acres on a pocket carry gun one time years ago. Clean you pistol, oil it and keep it clean. Works great

My first-year issue Hellcat has suffered from some rust. It is carried everyday with the exception of hunting seasons and a few weeks where I go with my XDM-E compact or a Sig sub-compact.
The mag release and take down pin have corroded somewhat. I have not replaced them. Just removed, very lightly sanded and oiled/rubbed. They now get a light coating of grease rather than oil on every field strip to clean and more so in the summer. The weather environment isn't the issue. Carrying OWB with a hoodie or shirt traps the perspiration of everyday activities. I didn't catch it until my mag release got stiff years ago. I still have it. I still carry it! It works fine but needs a little extra attention to keep it loose and ready.
I'll add that no other handgun I carry has done this including a P365 but.....................they aren't carried a fraction of what my trusty HC is.
Carry On!
