Well I was certainly eating the fries in the 70s and 80s.
I’ll be 52 in 3 hours.
I gotta tell ya I think this must be a misprint or a second recipe change or sumthin'. 'Cause I'm sure the original went away sometime around the late 70's maybe or early 80's. Now I've been known to be wrong a few occasions, (damn few mind you) and this might be another, but I just don't remember the really good fries, the ones that got McD's the reputation for having the best fries in the world hands down, after sometimes around the late 70's.

I'm pretty sure I can remember my new bride (June of '69) and I talking about how they had changed not too long after we were married, like maybe the late 70's. And she, like many other dates I had, always asked me to take her to McD's before anything else....... just for the fries. She and I spent probably more time sitting at McD's munching on fries than anything else I can think of. And actually now that I think back, I proposed to her as we were walking out of a McD's heading back to the car with a bag of fries in both our hands. Well, actually it wasn't really a proposal, more of a pleading/begging IIRC. ;):) In any event she said YES, so everything's alright!

But I'm gonna have to say they must have changed the original fries way back then to something, then again in the 90's based on whatever happened relative to this article and the idiot who had the heart attack and figured he should decide for me and everyone else in the world just what we should and shouldn't eat.

Again, I could be wrong, but it sure seems like it happened way before the 90's. How about it papa, Caro ..... somebody? Didn't it happen sometime before the 90's?

I'm thinking it was around 1990. Late 80's , very early 90's JJ.

Well JJ, as the article states (and I read this in several articles):
"McDonald’s changed the recipe of their French fries on July 23, 1990, and it hasn’t looked back."

That, plus that Ray Kroc followed the advice of the original owners the McDonald brothers as stated in the article:

"He said that when Kroc was running the show, he was adamant over the cooking of the fry. The McDonald’s brother’s had given him strict instructions — do not cook French fries in fat previously used to cook anything else — and Kroc was strict on this matter.

But over the years, McDonald’s lost its way, thanks to some “random guy from Omaha”. As hysteria grew over saturated fat McDonald’s was panicked to find a healthy solution.
"

I remember that it was the elimination of the beef tallow oil that change the taste, and it seems about right that it happen around the 1990 period if my memory serves correct. But who knows. 🤷‍♂️

Yeh, I read that. It still seems like it was a lot longer ago, but I guess not. Even at the 1990 date, that's still 30 yrs. Bassbob won't fit into that category as he says, but I'm sure a whole bunch of you young-un's will.

While thinkin' about this and tryin' to remember, I've put a lot of thought into whether Caro and I ever dated too....... remember when I quoted .... "Then Caro said "I’ve actually (in the past) requested that a guy take me to McDonalds for fries on a first date" ..... and then I wrote, "Well Caro, I don't specifically remember if you and I ever dated" but only kiddn', 'cause so many young ladies asked to be taken to McD's for fries, etc, etc, ......... well I've given it a lot of thought and I'm sure we never did date. I'm also sure it was likely to my detriment and certainly my loss ............... ! Any gal who wanted to be taken to McD's on a date night is plenty OK in my book! (y) (y) (y) ;):)

Yeh, I'm gonna have to agree. But like I said earlier ..... it sure seems like a lot longer than the 90's.

Well I hear ya, but in my mind, I thought it might have been more recent than that. I guess I'm getting to the point in my life where time is just flying by. I thought a trip I took to Ireland was only about 10 years ago, only to find I went there in 1998. My lord, that was 22 years ago 👨😲👨‍🦳😴

Oh c'mon now! Ain't nuthin' wrong with a good hot dog (all beef) stuffed into a nice warm, steamed bun and slathered down with some good chili and onions. Maybe even a little bit of shredded cheddar cheese. Heck man, that's like dyin' and goin' to heaven !!!!

'Bout the only thing I can think of any better is the old, original McD's fries !!! ;);):):):)(y)

C'mon ScottJ, there's no mystery meat to it. It's nothing more/less than boneless pork shoulder. Other than bacon and ham, probably the best part of the porker. (y)(y)(y)
Just doesn't look real appetizing to me. The visual of a McRib reminds me of the gelatinous stuff you see packed inside a can of vienna sausages.

For the record, I'm not a fan of McD's fries either. For awhile, BK had some they were calling "SatisFries" (pronounced like satisfy). Don't know if it was a regional thing or not, but I was disappointed when they discontinued those. Wendy's used to have good fries also, and were along the lines of a steak fry size-wise, before they changed them also, and went with the thin version like McD's and others use. However, the grandsons and I ate at McD's just recently, and I did eat the stringy fries, and as always, ended-up tossing all the ones with the hard-assed, over-cooked ends on them. 😊

Going back to the mid 90’s my now ex wife owned a Dairy Queen Franchise that we ran together. I worked there when I wasn’t working my full time job as well as driving for a wrecker service.
I do have to say when cooked just right the fries then were better then McDonalds.
