What have you bought firearms related in the last 48 hours?

Hi,

On a whim I stopped by the LGS today and they happened to have a sale on ammo, cheaper than online prices for this stuff. It's not my normal brand but for the price I figured I'd try a case of this .223 Rem and 9mm.

MaxxTech and Scorpio? I'll try anything once, twice if I like it. While I was there I also picked up an extra magazine for my HK VP9 and Ruger MkIV.

This also came in the mail today, a present for my Saint Victor AR-15. :)

I bought the red dot from Grab-a-Gun and added their sticker to my cabinet.

Tomorrow I'll get to the range so I can practice with the remote hole punchers. We'll have a forecast hi temp of 11°.

I generally avoid overseas ammunition unless I know someone who has ran a crap load of it and can give me feedback. Particularly where semi auto handguns are concerned, but that's just me. And while I am not an optic snob, I do have a threshold I won't go below. I spent a total of about $600 altogether on Romeo 5s, of which I am only now employing two with solid plans to ditch at least one of them at the earliest convenience. Nothing wrong with them, they are tough as nails and have never failed, but as I said, I have decided that is my lowest threshold.

Thanks Bob,

A few of the other students at my range use the MaxxTech. I'm assuming that's because it's pretty affordable. A couple of YouTubers said the Scorpio is decent plinking ammo. So I'll give them a whirl. And I've got lots of time to spend more money on optics for my AR. ;) It'll do for my first foray into scary black rifles.

I'll get back to you when I have questions.

Good luck with the TruGlo …
Recoil is not a friend of their quality manufacuting 🙂

I know you do my friend but based on your ammo expenditures over the last month, I would like to have seen your “ Foray” be a little further up the ladder.

It’s a lesson I learned a long time ago, mainly with PA gear. When you buy something try to make it something that will still be useful or of value to you when you inevitably upgrade. Which you will, of that I am certain.

So you buy some Alto TS-12s for FOH because you can’t afford the DSRs or the K-12s. When you CAN afford good tops, you can use the Altos as stage monitors. They have decent bass response and serve that role decently. They also make adequate front or side fills.

I just love that kind of talk! :)

Perhaps I could slow down a little on the ammo procurement. ;)

Woah, woah, let’s not be ridiculous now. I’m not suggesting any such thing.

Sure I have a couple “ budget” scopes on .22 rifles and I have no doubt they are pieces of shite. The thing is they’re on .22 rifles. There is zero chance of it ever mattering. Also I read about a hundred reviews from several places before I bought them. Actually the big scope I already had. It is a Primary Arms $100 scope I initially bought to slap on an AR I built. First trip to the range with it I realized it wasn’t going to do what I wanted it to do and took it off and put it in a drawer. I replaced it with a $1000 scope I bought used for $300 which does way more than I need it to do. Fast forward a few years and the cheap scope from my drawer gets a new lease on life as a nice 50-100 yard on an old .22 rifle.

The $100 Romeos I bought are all still operational, hold zero on ARs and 12 gauges, though most of them are no longer on my ARs or 12 gauges. They made nice gifts to friends and family for their first forays into red dots on ARs.

Generally speaking any red dot under $100 is very unlikely to be a solid unit. My miser ass, steel ammo buying, Taurus semi auto handgun buying, cheapskate ex marine armorer buddy Bill recently put an NC Star crap red dot on a lever action .357. We took it to the range and got it zeroed no problems. He was in the woods deer hunting with it this past rifle season. He shot at a deer, missed it and the dot simply disappeared off the glass. Tried new batteries, nope, it’s over. It’s not even worth trying to return it. He probably paid $30 for it.

I don’t know much about TruGlo dots. I like their iron sights. Hopefully when you upgrade the optic on your AR the Tru Glo can find a home on a range pistol or .22 rifle for you.
