Why Is Texas Sen. John Cornyn Working With Democrats to Outlaw Private Gun Sales?

Even some of the laws we have today need reinventing, rather than enforcement. I can't say how many times I've complained about the stupid law that says if I carry a gun within 1000' of a school I'm in violation ..... here's why that's stupid.

If I'm a legal, law-abiding, state certified CCW carrier when I'm standing at 1000ft of a school, what happens to make me a criminal if I take one step towards the school and now am standing at 999ft? Or if I'm deemed law-abiding enough to walk around most areas of town carrying concealed, why am I immediately a criminal the minute I step across the threshold of a court house, or a post office, or any other gov't building, or anywhere else deemed a violation? Either I'm a law-abiding CCW carrier or I'm not ...... let's fix it so I'm treated that way.

Is there some magic thing that happens to affect me physically and/or mentally? Of course not !!! These are stupid laws that do not deserve to be enforced. However they do need to be re-addressed to better align with the real purpose of the law...... assuming there is one. For example the one about being within 1000ft of a school while carrying ...... How is it any more dangerous for me to be carrying at 999ft than if I'm at 1000ft? It's not, and the purpose of the law is to prevent school shootings. OK, I'm all for that, but making me a criminal for one step in one direction is stupid.

Make the law so that the penalty for a school shooting is that swift, sure and severe punishment. Not all school shooters can be hung in the town square, nor beheaded on the court house steps because they're cowards and kill themselves before they're caught. But those are the mental defects I've already mentioned. The rest, those that are just bullies, or copy cats, or mad at someone in particular will often be there to face the music because they get no notoriety if they're not, and they know it. However, if they know being caught means instant humiliation by stretching a rope, or knowing folks will watch their heads roll off into a basket, they'll likely find some other method to vent their anger or their need to copy.

Those above are two very real laws that do in fact infringe on law-abiding citizens and should not exist, especially in these forms. However, any law that negatively impacts the bad guys with no negative impact on the good guys will have my support. I'm pretty sure most of us feel that way. We all just have to really reflect on who a particular law does affect. I think we'll all be better off when/if we support those laws that impact the bad guys and resist/fix those that are stupidly affecting us good guys. (y) (y) (y)

Come on, that’s all ridiculous. All this patchwork of stupid laws that only apply to guns. How about just one law. If you commit a crime with a gun you go to jail for 50 years with no parole. It pretty much covers everything don’t it ?

I like it !!! Or something real close to it. I've said for years it's stupid to be found in violation of a law simply by owning an inanimate object (gun or other), the violation and respective punishment should be if/when it's used unlawfully.

I said in an earlier post that to me the 2nd amendment should be all the license we need ...... unless and until we ourselves forfeit that right. And that punishment for a willful and/or intentional violation of gun a law should be severe, swift and sure !!!(y)(y)(y)

You have a slight error of fact. Currently, at least, a private seller/transferrer in Illinois can sell a gun to an Illinois resident who has a valid FOID card. Several years ago, a requirement was added and the private seller/transferrer must go online to an ISP portal, type in the FOID number and some information to verify the FOID is still valid. The verification/denial is accomplished in seconds if the user has good internet speed. The seller/transferrer then has to print/save the screenshot for their records.

Just a correction, nothing more. The whole change was confusing to many people, especially those who don't use computers.
Thank you.
Yes it is confusing to say the least. For those that don't have computers and rely on a smartphone it gets even more dicey. The State Police computer system can be very unfriendly. They even have prompts that pop up.
It's such a joke. ☹️

My old house was 75' from the grade school entrance. My state at one time was trying to get folks that had more than 1000 rounds or so many number if guns that were that close to schools to apply for "armory license"
Thank God it never passed!

This was in discussions when they were hammering out the CCW. Some very level-headed people had the thought that what if they were walking down the street or turn the corner riding a bike or a motorcycle and suddenly they're within a thousand feet of a grade school which are in mostly neighborhoods in our area.

Just one example of the stupidity of some of the 'feel good' legislation we almost live with. This kind of crap will only end when we take our country back from the 'bleeding hearts' and 'do-gooders' that have over time moved into positions of control. At least in your case cooler and obviously smarter heads prevailed. Unfortunately there are so many examples that went the other way.

Just think how the brain that thought this up in the beginning must work! What difference would it make if someone had 1000 rnds or 100 rounds? What difference would it have made if someone had 10 guns, or 100 guns? If they had bad intentions, they could have done them in either case.

And who in hell would have considered that forcing someone to apply for and hold an armory license would in some way prevent them from doing any bad deeds if in fact they were inclined to do them. More stupidity, more stupidity, more stupidity! If just some of that kind of effort were actually spent towards solving the real crime situation, just think how much better off the country would be.

Unfortunately solving these problems doesn't fit into the narrative of some. We can fix that come 2022 !!! (y) (y) (y) I for one want my country back, the one with morals, traditions, and real equality for all.

Another hod podge of stupidity. The federal law says no firearms within 1000 ft of a school grounds under most any conditions. However, then there are exceptions for a couple reasons at the state level. In my state for example, a CCW licensee can carry on a school property inside a vehicle, but not outside the vehicle except under very explicit exceptions as long as the school is in your state and the state where you're licensed. However in no case can the firearm be removed from the vehicle. Now this only applies to elem and secondary schools in your state, but not to college campuses. And does not apply to any school outside your state. Can we say STUPIDITY kids? There is a minor exception in some cases where a gun can be carried unloaded and cased onto a school property for a specific firearm related class or other instructional activity ........ Hummmmmmmmm?

Guns can be inside a vehicle on some school grounds provided the person is at least 18 yrs of age and the firearm is securely encased or otherwise inaccessible, however school districts across the state can adopt policies that negates this law. This means that you may be legal to carry on your person in your car in the school district of your county, but in the next county over you may be illegal. Can we say STUPIDITY again kids?

Federal law says no guns within 1000ft of a school with very limited exceptions. Another example of the feds saying one thing and the locals saying another. More STUPIDITY, huh?

These are just real quick examples of how so many of our laws are so worthless and non-sensible. So much effort and time spent on these types of idiocies that could be spent making a real difference if only the elected leaders would take the initiative.

Yep, there are all kinds of stupid, contradictory laws on the books. Which is another reason why we don't need another law regulating private citizens selling guns to one another. Clean up what's there. Clarify current laws. ENFORCE current laws. DON'T ADD NEW LAWS!!!

I never heard of a federal law that prohibits carrying within 1000' of a school. It certainly isn't in force in my state.

Federal law impacts every state in the union obviously since it's federal. However, as noted in my post #49 above, some/most states have statutes that exempt folks from certain portions of this federal law. I have no idea how Missouri is regarding this but would expect it's handled much like mine and many other states. I gave a real quick/short listing of how my state deals with it. It's not absolutely a complete listing of the state exemptions, but covers the most critical ones. (y)(y)(y)
