A local sporting goods store has a S&W, 44 Magnum snub nose revolver in their display case. It’s similar to the one in this picture. I’d bet the recoil on that revolver would be brutal. If I remember correctly the price was $1199.00. Who in the heck would buy a revolver like this? Why would you even want to own a gun like that?

I had a S&W 640 in 357 mag with a 2.2 inch barrel and it was incredibly painful to shoot magnums with it.
 
A lot depends on your perspective. I have shot .38 special +P in a snubbie and the recoil did not seem that bad to me but a lot of folks say the recoil is terrible. I could see carrying the .44 magnum snubbie if in grizzly country and needing a good backup. I suspect the recoil would wake you up though!
 
i have a 2.5" Ruger GP 100, that shoots .357 magnums, and of course, .38 specials.

of course the .38's are smoother, but the magnums aren't that bad, as that gun is heavy metal

i once had a Taurus Ultra lite .38 special, and my God......talk about rattling the teeth...dang gun was lite alright, in it's metal....i dumped it rather quick.

I have one, I find it very pleasant to to shoot all full bore .357 mag, even 180gr.
 
"Three finger" grips could make a big difference in comfortably shooting a big bore snub nose pistol (or a .357magnum for that matter). It's hard to tell from that stock image, but the back strap may not be covered with those wood grips.

I took off the original "two finger" Kimber K6S/DC 2" smooth G10 boot grips with exposed back strap and replaced them with three finger control core rubber over mold grips that cover the back strap. I can comfortably shoot about 30rds of 135gr .357magnum before my carpel tunnel kicks in.

I want one and was about to buy one at my LGS used for $900 in great condition, but it sold when I came back to buy it. It's a 38oz revolvers that can also shoot 44spc too you know, and it's not really meant as a high round range day fun to shoot revolver although with the right loads it can be. Your 640 is about a pound lighter at 22.5oz shooting 357, so I'd imagine it would be more harsh than a 38oz 44mag. Most people who own the M69 and M629 snubbing primarily shoot 44spc out of them anyway.

FYI: I have a 44Mag M69 Combat Magnum with a 2.75" barrel built on an L-frame that's 34oz. I plan on selling it towards a M629 Performance or standard 3" M629.
